FAFSA refund - payed tuition already

Ok, so I payed my tuition with a credit-card already and I'm applying for the 2012-2013 FAFSA now. When I am approved, can I get a check for the amount of money I've already used for tuition back to pay the credit cards?

Usually schools have refund policies in place where if you have a credit (ie, negative balance) on your account, they will refund the money to you in the form of check or electronic transfer (direct deposit). It should be on their ebill website. If not, call them to find out how to set it up!

Usually refunds are not given out till the first week of school.

The refunds could take a while. My D’s school direct deposit to our checking account in the second month of semester.

One of my kids’ schools didn’t do refunds until near the END of each term. You need to check YOUR college’s policy.

What do you hope to get as a result of filing the FAFSA for this year?

And FREE advice…get this all done in January for the 2013-2014 school year. Then check to see if your college participates in one of the monthly payment plans.

So, you PAID for your tuition. How much did you pay? What is your EFC?

How much aid are you expecting?

Federal aid isn’t much. If you’re attending a CC, then maybe you’ll get enough aid to cover the costs.

Each school has its own policies about refunds. Some refund a few weeks after school starts, some later.

If you are eligible for aid, you should receive a refund check for any excess balance in your account. As others have said, the timing will vary according to each school’s policies. My daughter’s school issued refund checks the week after the add/drop period (so about 3 weeks after school started). My son’s school took 6 weeks in a good semester - his last semester it was almost the end of the semester.
