FAFSA Residency Question

So I’m applying for financial aid for 2017-2018. I was born in TN and was a resident for 22 years until I became a MO resident for 8 years. I moved back to TN and have been a TN resident for about 6 months.

Do I answer yes or no for the question “have you lived in TN for at least 5 years?” Technically I have but not for a long time. If I answer no, it asks if I became a legal resident of TN before 1/1/2012. Technically I was since I was a TN resident from birth to 2008.

I just want to make sure I fill this question out correctly! Thanks!

You need to be there for a year.

I understand the guidelines for being classified as an in-state student for tuition purposes. However, I am asking specifically about the FAFSA form where they ask if I have lived in TN for at least 5 years. My assumption is that the answer is no because it is asking about my most recent time as a TN resident and it’s only been 6 months. With an answer of no, it asks if I have become a legal resident of TN before 1/1/12. Technically I was a TN resident before 2012. I’m not sure how to handle this question since I been a resident of TN twice. I’m leaning towards no for both questions but I do not want to mess up the FAFSA form.

I think “no” is the right answer for both questions; I think the questions only pertain to your most recent Tennessee residency.

It probably pertains to being eligible for TN state aid, you can call them and ask.

FAFSA asks the state of residency but it doesn’t really matter. Some states have extra questions even if you qualify for simplified means or automatic zero, but it doesn’t change the federal aid you qualify for.
