I filled out the FAFSA at the end of January, but I just remembered that my dad had me put a guess on the "income tax paid" section and the income tax return is down as "will file". He said he won't know the income tax or file the tax return until April, and he's unemployed/nonmarried so I don't really think it'll bring the EFC up from 0 anyways, no matter what it is. Will I be able to leave it like that until April if my school's priority deadline is March 1st?

Also, I was selected for verification, but it didn't really say what that meant. Do I have to worry about that now, or will I be told what to do when the time comes? Does it have to do with him not having the tax return filed yet?

Thanks. Sorry if I sound like an idiot; I just know absolutely nothing about all of this.

The school will tell you what they want for verification. In our experience it has been a form to complete and copies of tax returns and W2s. The verification process probably cannot be completed until taxes are complete.

30% of FAFSAs are selected for verification, many just randomly. We are always selected - 7 for 7 so far. Except for the 1st time my kids have had 0 EFC so I wonder if a 0 always triggers verification. But we were verified the 1st time as well.

Yes. Update the numbers before then if you have better info. The school will adjust your aid package (easy to adjust down but hard to adjust up) based upon actual numbers.

question, how do they notify you?
I have been selected for verification but my schools haven't asked for it yet, atleast the ones I have been accepted to.

Notification varies by school. Some will send you the request via postal mail, others may send it via email. Still others use IDOC. For example, students enrolled in the Traditional program at my institution are notified by postal mail, but students in our adult program are notified by email. The best bet is to call the school(s) in question and ask them their method of notification.

Our policy is to notify a student through their school email account (accepted applicants are given an email address). All notifications are done this way. Many students tell us they didn't bother to read our emails. So to speed up your awards - don't ignore emails from your school! :)

We are not ready to begin taking forms for next year yet. I imagine many schools are in the same situation. Sit tight & respond if/when you are asked for info.

My daughters school the status of their financial aid (FAFSA received, verification required etc) is posted in their personal student information page (which they can sign up for as soon s they are accepted). My son's school sends a letter in the mail.

I have a question - what do I do if I have to send in 2008 tax returns to some colleges but my dad won't be able to file them until april? some of them wanted them in february. do I email them, saying it's on the way? or what

BTW: You only need to verify with the school you actually attend. Failure to verify holds up disbursement. They can do everything else without verification.

In other words, wait till you chose a school (send in your enrollment deposit). Then contact that school's financial aid office and ask them about verification.

My kids schools would not even do any sort financial aid offer until we completed the verification process. So if financial aid may be a deciding factor for which school you will attend, you may have to provide verification data to more than one school.
