FAFSA Stress

I applied for FAFSA for 2012 Summer and for 2012/2013.
I sent my residency information and it is showing it has been received for 2012/2013 but for 2012 summer it says still waiting for info even though I sent it to FSU.
I called up FSU's Fincial Aid last week and she said that they received the info but haven't updated it for the summer 2012.
So I'm worried b/c if it's not done within 30 days I lose out. Does it usually take several days before it updates to show they have all the info needed?
It's just so incredibly frustrating.

Don’t stress about it. That’s the best advice to give.

If FSU says they have your info, they have it and just haven’t gotten to updating it.

Also, just a random piece of advice: if you get an email from FAFSA saying your FAFSA was updated, and you’re 100% sure that you hadn’t touched your FAFSA in weeks, don’t freak (necessarily). It’s possible for FSU to adjust your FAFSA- it’s happened to me twice (granted, each time was when I was “randomly selected” for verification… yeah).

We just got a notice from FAFSA that my son’s financial aid was updated by the university. I looked and I don’t see what they updated but we were also selected for verification and i sent in all the required docs and they received them. Maybe they notify FAFSA that they completed the verification process and that is what triggers the update notification?

That is what happens, yes. If nothing changed, then it just means that your documents all checked out. You also might not notice what was changed right away; I know that the first time I got that weird email saying that the university had changed my FAFSA I didn’t notice any changes either, but later I was able to see that they had made the tiniest of adjustments to one area, and administratively changed my EFC by nearly 1000.

thanks Pasbal. I’m currently on the phone w their Financial Aid to clear up some things b/c now it’s requesting more info.

They were super helpful. She told me I need to write ‘for 2011/2012’ on the faxed forms so they will put it in for my summer fafsa. Everything else is set though. I can relax now lol.

I was told that financial aid for this summer will only be loans:(

When I filled it out and it was confirmed it said I was eligible for a grant.

When did you fill it out? Maybe the woman I spoke with meant that all the grant money was gone already:(

I had never thought of going to school in the summer since I couldn’t use Bright Futures. I just called today, so it must be too late now.

Nolette - I am also concerned about how financial aid is going to stack up this summer. I spoke with the financial aid person in the CARE office today (my daughter was CARE 2011) and asked if there was anything additional we needed to do for continuation of her grants from last year. I wasn’t sure what “renewable as available” meant specifically in regard to her First Generation Grant. He told me that FSU only got enough matching funds to offer 9 First Generation Grants this year at all to the CARE students from this year’s class and previous years combined. Yikes! I believe that PELL is not available for the summers anymore and, as you stated, Bright Futures is not available. Holding my breath since my daughter needs to take two classes this summer to meet the conditions of her acceptance into her major college for the fall semester.

Brand new freshmen eligible for Pell Grants should be able to get Pell money for summer term; continuing students probably not because second Pells (summer Pells) are no longer. An option for continuing students during summer who only need a couple of courses is to take transferable coursework as a transient student from FSU at their hometown community college–you can save the expenses of room and board, etc. by living at home summertime–you just have to pay tuition and books and you can still apply to FSU for financial aid (probably just loans) for reimbursement for community college tuition and books. Talk to your FSU academic advisor and financial aid advisor for info on transient studies.

Thanks Tallalassie for the option. My daughter has to take one specific prerequisite for her program that starts in the fall so I will have to look and see if that same course is available here and transferable.

I looked at their site:
[fsu.edu | Office of Financial Aid](http://financialaid.fsu.edu/aid/grants_ugrad.html)

It doesn’t say anything about not receiving grants for summer. It just says about taking a minimum of 12 credits during the summer as well.

Where is your information that Pell Grants won’t be available for continuing students this summer? I applied for summer aid pretty early when the option became available, and i remember last year it will show pretty much a few weeks after registration. However, i made off pretty decently on pell grant money last year.
LINK LINK LINK MEH :)

Oh and another thing, you guys have any clue what

Note – effective 7/1/2012 a student may only receive the Pell grant for 6 annual awards. This is effective for all Pell eligible students.

means?

^Last academic year they were still doing second Pells (summer Pells) in same academic year–not this year. Last year if you got 1st Pell over fall and sprg semesters—that was 1st Pell–the Pell money you got in summer was a 2nd Pell grant. That ended with last summer–no more 2nd Pells. The 6 year cap for getting Pells is I guess to keep some students from abusing Pell program and staying in school forever living off Pell money.

Contact FSU financial aid office if you have questions about awards for summer; they can help you best.

“Note: Fiscal Year 2011 appropriations eliminated the allowance of receiving up to two consecutive Pell Grant awards during a single award year. Beginning with the 2011-12 award year, you may receive only one Pell Grant award during a single award year.”

papertiger - I haven’t heard anything definite, other than on the PELL grant, about grants not being available this summer. Nolette must have a different source. However, my concerns came out of the fact that many of my daughter’s grants came to her because of her admission through CARE and their dedicated financial resource made some comments yesterday that concerned me. There’s no way to know absolutely 100%how things are going to play out until the awards are packaged and viewable on Blackboard.

Thanks Tallalassie.
Those changes suck!
Summer aid was great, was able to use most of the money excess for rent.
And im sad about the six pell thing, as i wouldn’t mind being an undergrad forever ;(
