FAFSA - taxes filed/not filed

Ok - we did the FAFSA today (just got our taxes finished). So we had the "true" numbers when we filled out the FAFSA. Our taxes will be electronically submitted tomorrow. We had to wait for one more form (since we are self employed) that is not available till tomorrow. On the FAFSA we said that our taxes were not filed yet. After they are filed tomorrow should we go in the next day and note on the FAFSA that are taxes were filed electronically? Or do we have to wait a few days for them to "show up" before we note anything on the FAFSA? I hope this question makes sense. Thanks!

I think you can update FAFSA right after you successfully submit (similar to having it postmarked in the old days and it does not matter when the IRS open the envelope - and you can only get refund money couple weeks later and may get audited couple months later).

Not right away - you have to wait until you receive the email that the FAFSA has been processed. THEN you can update it.

I filed the FAFSA early in January with estimates provided by our accountant, checking will file. Then last week, our accountant finalized our taxes. Due to some gov’t snafu, tax returns cannot be filed until “mid February.” Since some of D’s colleges have Feb. 15 deadlines. I updated FAFSA with new numbers (barely different from estimates) and checked filed, even though I have no idea when exactly my accountant can file them (electronically). Hope that was ok.

Last week we completed our taxes and the FAFSA. Two days later we received our SAR and email stating our FAFSA had been processed. We too were working on a Feb 15th deadline for one of my son’s schools and really wanted it completed by that date. So a few days ago, I asked FAFSA online chat if it would be ok to change our FAFSA filing status from “Will File” to “Completed” even though they might not be electronically processed on or after Feb 14th. Their response was that that I could in fact go back in and make the change now even though IRS has not accepted or processed our tax return if our taxes were completed.

I can’t get my fom turned in because it won’t let me. whenever my mom signs electronicaly with her PIN to get to the IRS website, it says Tech Error. What can I do?
