So I was getting ready to fill out my FAFSA, but I was wondering if I check 'No' for the "Selective Service" portion. I am still 17 but will turn 18 this year (March). What do I do? Do I click yes right now, and later when I turn 18 register for the selective service? Or do I just click no?

You can say “no” to “are you registered?” and then “yes” to “do you want us to register you?” – that question will appear if you say no to the first one. This worked out fine, even for my older son who did not turn 18 until September of his freshman year. I believe they registered him a month or so before his birthday.

Oh, no, my son is 17 (will be 18 in July) and I checked “no,” and also “no” to “do you want us to register you?” because he’s not 18 yet. What do you think I should do now? I got my SAR and there doesn’t seem to be a problem with it, yet. ???

Did you submit a “will file” FAFSA? If so I’d suggest changing the second answer to “yes” when you go in to do updates and use the IRS tool to pull down your tax return info. Alternately, he can “pre”-register himself now, so there will be no chance of him forgetting and having a problem come August if they try to disburse his aid and find that he’s not eligible because he’s 18 and not yet registered.
