fafsa verification and ACG

My daughter got her SAR today. We are being verified. At the end of the SAR it tells you to complete the checklist and correct your fafsa if needed. The only items listed on the checklist are dealing with the ACG award which has to do with her saying that she took a rigorous selection of courses in highschool. Does anyone know if this is a common thing to be verified for?

30% of FAFSAs are randomly selected for verification. There does not have to be a reason. We have done 7 FAFSAs and been selected for verification 7 times.Your school(s) will contact you regarding what they require for the verification process. It usually includes a form with some personal data and copies of tax and income documentation.

As far as ACG is concerned the school has to check your daughter's transcript after graduation before they can award the ACG (which is completely different from the verification process). It was the very last thing my daughter was awarded - i think she was awarded it just before her first semester started.

Thanks for your reply. I was just a little stressed when I saw we were selected for verification. Does the school send the verification request after they send the financial aid package to us or before?

The school(s) will send you information regarding what they want you to send. Just wait for that.

I also got that today, but it is the first time out of four times completing FAFSA. I had never heard of it either. I don't really understand the ACG. Is it a significant grant ?

With both my kid's schools the verification was done before any financial aid package was sent.

The ACG is the Academic Competitiveness Grant. It just available for 2 years - $750 for a freshman and $1300 for a sophomore. It requires Pell eligibility and some academic requirements.

ACG will probably not be awarded in your initial award letter, because info has to be manually verified. This kind of verification is totally different from the fafsa verification. It involves auditing the transcript for certain requirements, checking citizenship, checking gpa & course load, etc. Just make sure to turn in a final transcript if your school requires it for ACG (some will use the one turned in for records, others require a new one be turned in to financial aid).
