FAFSA Verification and Divorce

My son’s FAFSA was selected for verification. His father and I divorced in 2017, but when I filled out the FAFSA in Feb 2018 I understood it to say that I was to complete the parent portion with just my 2016 income and tax information (as the custodial parent, and even though we were married in 2016 and filed jointly). I’m pretty sure I did that part right, but who knows. Has anyone experienced this? Should I be worried?

Some schools verify every single FAFSA while others do 1 in 3, or 25%, or whatever they feel they need to do. Don’t worry.

Since you probably used 2016 income, which was on a married tax forms, they are going to want to see the income just attributed to you. Probably the W2’s. Just give them what they request and you’ll be fine.

Don’t worry about it - the school will review your information and make any necessary updates to the information you submitted. It’s possible no updates will be necessary. If you didn’t split it properly, the school will make adjustments based on your tax information … but it may not have any noticeable impact on your aid.
