I just received a notification on my sons fafsa that it is subject for verification process. What does this mean? And what type of documentation is usually required?

If you do a search for recent threads about verification, you’ll find several. They should answer your questions.

Use the “search this forum” button at the top righthand corner of the main financial aid page. Click on “advanced search” - that will take you here. Switch from “search entire posts” to “search titles only” to search for thread titles that contain the word “verification.” You’ll get plenty of results!

Focus on the threads that have posted in the past week or two.

The brief answer is that the schools will let you know what they need. You may be asked to use the fafsa irs data retrieval tool or send the school a tax transcript. If either you or your student weren’t required to file a tax return, you will likely need to sign and return a non-filers statement. If you filled out your fafsa accurately it’s not a big deal except for getting it done in a timely way, meeting the schools’ deadlines.

I have one other questions. I keep getting conflicting answers from fafsa. I have to make a correction on the selective service question, zip code and use the data retrieval tool for both my son and myself. My taxes are being held up right now because of IRS forms, not quite sure when I will be able to upload my taxes possibly first of March. I was told by fafsa I should take care of my sons and the other two items and do mine when I can. Does it hurt or look wierd to submit corrections twice? I am already being verified, trying to make the rest of this go smoothly and I am assuming since I will be using the IRS data retrieval tool shortly this might satisfy the verification. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am assuming we are being verified because we are qualifying for the Pell Grant.

You don’t want to be updating 10 times or whatever, but doing an estimated fafsa, updating your son’s stuff and later doing yours is not a problem. 3 steps to being done is fine. You especially want to get the selective service and zip code things fixed soon so do his retrieval with them and yours as soon as possible.

Thank you so much for the help!!!

I just used the irs data retrieval tool to update my estimated income. On the information being transferred it states this. "Your filing status indicates you may need to split this amount and enter it in teo places on the fafsa. Mother question 86 on fafsa and father question 87 on fafsa. I am assuming i need to manually enter these numbers to match this. It did not say these were transferred from irs website like the rest of the line items. I think mine is different because my husband is self employed. Anyone else have this situation? Any help would be appreciated.

Sorry typo “two places”.

As I recall the SAR following using the tool shows which questions were updated from the IRS and I’m pretty sure the income from work questions aren’t among them. I don’t think the IRS has the data to know how much each parent made from work since it can be more than just W-2 income. So yes, I would update those questions to the actual amounts.

Thanks again Annyoyingdad. This site has provided great information.
