FAFSA verification

Im an undergrad student entering my 4th year of college and i was selected for verification back in may. I gave in everything that they have requested from me which were W-2s of my parents and myself, Tax transcripts, and personal statements that they asked for weeks after. Once i gave in the statements i got an email saying that my FAFSA was successfully processed. Weeks after giving the statements, i get an additional email stating that there are still issues on what i gave in and to contact the FA office at my university for assistance. For this upcoming year, i am not recieving any type of aid for the year because my EFC was at 006170 and my parents made alot in 2016. I was wondering if i can just pay out of pocket and ignore the verification process that im currently dealing with?

Call the FA office and talk to them. You should be able to cancel the FA request.

You can, but if you need the student loan you have to complete the FAFSA process.

Thank you guys so much for the responses i truely appreciate it.

@“Erin’s Dad” i forgot to mention that i had a minimal amount of TAP which just proccessed today to my current balance but im still in verification would it be problamatic at this point or should i contact the school ?

@twoinanddone ^

If you are getting any aid that is based on the FAFSA, you have to complete the verification process, so if your TAP is based on it, yes, you have to continue.

Contact the school. It may be that you have completed everything and your file wasn’t updated so the automatic notices keep coming. If you’ve provided tax forms and the transcript and the W2, there’s not much more they can ask for. Call them. I hope it is just an administration glitch.

@twoinanddone i will contact them right at this instance thank you so much.

Can more people with knowledge about the verification process comment on this thread so i can have more feedback?

@jose1997, Is that a NYS TAP Grant? If so, call HESC and ask them what you need to do to keep your grant. If you’re eligible, I wouldn’t leave money on the table.

@austinmshauri it is NYS TAP grant but on CUNYfirst the financial aid package was on view my financial aid.I’t gives the option to accept the awards or decline which i assumed i was safe to accept this award. A few weeks after they sent me the email and ive been trying to contact the office and they have yet to pick up the phone call.i check my CUNYfirst today planning to decline the TAP award and to cancel my FAFSA application but my TAP was processed towards my balance.Work is super busy for me this week so it is difficult for me to commute to my university until next week when school officially starts.

@sybbie719 knows a lot about our schools. Maybe she’ll weigh in. I wouldn’t cancel the FAFSA until you find out if it will affect your TAP Grant. And I wouldn’t decline the TAP grant unless you’re sure your parents are willing/able to turn down the money.

If you cancel your FAFSA, you will not get your TAP. You will end up owing this money. You must file the FAFSA in order to get TAP, SEEK, College, Discovery, ASAP, STEM scholarship, excelsior, etc.

@sybbie719 I understand that but i am confused as to why my TAP was Processed towards my balance today on CUNYfirst when i’m still currently in verification after giving them everything they requested.

@thumper1 what do you think about this situation?

@mom2collegekids

You wont get any actual money paid on your behalf until you complete the verification process. The school would have to return the money to the state

@sybbie719 I’m going to have to let the school know that my TAP processed on my balance when it wasn’t suppose to then. I just don’t want this to develop into any trouble or anything just been concerned about this for a while.

Your TAP is still just an estimate, it is not going to e processed until you go through verification, The school cannot credit your account with that amount of money. It does not matter what your CUNYfirst says. No one is going to fail an audit or risked being fined for you.

Look, if you/ your parents can pay the whole bill out of pocket, that is what you have to do…If you don’t want to be botherered with the verification process, the you will not get any aid; no PELL, no TAP, NO Loans, NO Federal WS.

@sybbie719 I would rather pay the tuition fully to avoid any trouble. I’m going to hold of from any payments until I go to the financial aid office and figure out why I am still in verification and why my TAP was processed when it was not suppose to.Depending on what they tell me will determine if I am able to complete my verification or just cancel my FAFSA application for the upcoming year.
