FAFSA Verification

Question:

A week ago, I found out my school asked me for FAFSA verification. I turned in my forms and got everything together. When I filled out my FAFSA for this year, I didn't include my stepfather's information because I didn't know it was needed and just used my mom's information as I had in the past because they always filed separately. While the school will correct that info for this year, I'm curious to know what impact it will have on me because of past mistakes.

Any help would be appreciated.

You never included your stepfather’s information before because he and your mother filed separately?? Good question on how that will be used for past years.

Call the school. They are the experts. All the people in this forum can do is speculate.

If I was you, I’d just submit the verification documents they asked for. Don’t give them documents they haven’t asked for and don’t answer questions that haven’t been asked.

If they ask you about previous years, then address that issue but not before you’ve been directly asked.

In another thread you learned about how a step-parent’s income and assets are reportable on the FAFSA, so now you know. As to how that error in reporting in past years will play out… hard to say. It may not come up. If it does, then you’ll have to deal with it.
