So I'm helping on of my friends at church fill out the FAFSA form and I am running into trouble with fill out his FAFSA form. He is applying to 2 4-year public schools. His legal status is that he is a citizen, but both his parents are undocumented and don't have a SSN card. His parents, however, do file taxes annual by a SSN given to them by the IRS, so I'm confused if I should provide put this number on his FAFSA form, or what I need to put on his form. Any ideas?

If he is a citizen, then that is fine. Yes he should use the SSN that his parents use to file taxes.

I don’t believe that is a SSN number, but something else.

I think they are to use all zeroes.

What they file taxes with is likely an ITIN number. I volunteered to do FAFSA’s for low income kids a year ago and we ran into this a lot. I forget what the solution was, but it was something bizarre like you just don’t have to list the parents.

A helpful tip, when you’re completing the fafsa there’s an option to “live chat” with someone who can answer your questions. Their hours are actually really awesome too, which one wouldn’t expect. I think it was something like until midnight, if not 24 hours.

they cannot fill out the fafsa using the ITIN number.

On the FAFSA the parents must put in 000000000(all zeros) in the social security number field.

In addition, they are not eligible to apply for a PIN, so they must print out the signature sheet and snail mail the form in to the processing center. Unfortunately, this process also delays the student getting their feedback regarding their submitted FAFSA.

If there are any changes/corrections made on the FAFSA, they must print out a new signature sheet and snail mail the form to the processing center.
