Fafsa without taxes?

Hi,

I am a US (missouri) permanent resident but I live in Pakistan. I am applying to US for this fall admissions. My Father lives in Saudi Arabia and the rest of the Family (including me) lives in Pakistan. My parents are both working but as we do not live in the US we do not file Taxes there. As FAFSA asks a lot of questions regarding that i just want to know how does that effect my case?

Secondly I applied to the University of Missouri and have been admitted. Can i still file a FAFSA for it or am i too late? The admission is not official yet, some Admissions rep. that i correspond with gave me a Heads up.

The information above may be a little hard to process if you cant understand my case do tell and i will try to clarify.

FAFSA forms aren’t even available until January. Better ask individual schools.

alright the first question still stands how does not filing taxes effect my case?

For another school you would send front & back copy of your permanent resident card to admissions- I don’t think you file FAFSA if non citizen.

I think we do … It says in FAFSA eligibility criteria that you can apply if you are a non citizen.

just want to know how not paying taxes effects the equation.

I think just expect someplace on FAFSA/forms to ask how you will pay expenses, but there is a place to indicate you don’t pay taxes.

& be sure to register for Selective Service. ( if you are male)

Afaik, all US permanent residents are required to file US income tax forms even if they’re working abroad. That obligation continues until they have surrendered their green cards and are no longer permanent residents. Permanent residents can file FAFSA. Your folks need to consult with a US tax preparer and get their US taxes filed!

^^My thought also. Unless for some reason his parents are not US permanent residents or citizens and he is currently by birth. What is your parents status? If they were required to file tax forms they might want to straighten that out if you might qualify for federal aid of need to take out a student direct loan.

I agree with sk8rmom.

Plus, if you have been living outside US for over a year without a valid ‘re-entry permit’, your greencard may have already been revoked and you may not even be able to enter US without a visa. In that case FAFSA is moot.

yes, my parents are residents aswell … and no i will not be out of US for more than a year when i come back.

Thanks for the feedback…

You’ve been given good info above, your parents are expected to file taxes no matter where they live. One thing to keep in mind is that it’s unlikely that you will pay instate tuition if your parents have not paid Missouri taxes in the last year.

Do E-mail the University of Missouri and ask for confirmation of your status as an in-state student so there are no surprises in the coming year. E-mail so you have the confirmation in writing. If there is any documentation needed they will probably tell you.
