Fafsa

I have a few questions regarding FAFSA. My mom who is my only legal guardian doesnt have a job. She receives SSDI (Social Security Disability Income) and we are on section 8 and food stamps. She has a boyfriend who proivides alot of money for my for my family (more than half of my monetary support comes from him). He even filed me as a dependent on his taxes last year. He is not my legal guardian though. My mom obviously doesn't file taxes. So, my question is how do I report all of this on the FAFSA? When I did it today, I saw no place for me to input information regarding Section 8 or Food stamps, just my mom's SSDI. And do I even report my mom's boyfriends contributions at all? I have an EFC of 0 but Im pretty sure its going to remain the same even with my mom's boyfriend's assets. As a hosehold, we receive about 25,000 per year. That is including my sister's SSI (She receives money from the gvt. because she is ADHD, not too sure of all the details regarding this income) Does my sister's income go on FAFSA if the money goes to my mom to spend on her behalf?

Untaxed SSDI, SSI, and the value of other state/federal/local benefits like HEAP, HUD, and food stamps are not reported on FAFSA. You correctly used your mother, not her boyfriend, as your parent but I’m puzzled as to how you even saw the remaining income questions. It seems to me that if your mom answered “yes” to the qualifying questions about receiving TANF, Food Stamps, Free/Reduced School Lunches, etc. and had a “will not file” tax status with income under $30K, that it would have automatically given you a 0 EFC. Anyway, if you’ve submitted already, just check that those qualifying questions were answered correctly…I’m no expert on skip logic and FAFSA!

Child support, if she receives any, would be reported as untaxed income (line 92) and her boyfriend’s contribution may make a difference in whether your sister is counted in your mom’s household size…if he provides more than half her support too, then I think your household size is 2 since the student and FAFSA parent are always included. Here’s a link to the detailed FAFSA instructions which should help:

No she doesn’t receive child support. My real father is incarcerated and my sister’s father is deceased. Im a little confused about the household size. My mother’s boyfriend does provide for more than half of my sister’s support. The FAFSA didn’t ask for Food Stamps (I was looking for the question as I was doing the FAFSA) or maybe I just missed it. Ill double check and make sure all of the questions are answered correctly once my FAFSA is done processing. Also, there is a question that asks about money being paid FOR me, would I put my mom’s boyfriend’s contributions her or do I just not report him at all?

I believe there is a question on the FAFSA re: money paid on your behalf by others. This would include rent, utilities, and other things that someone else pays for on your behalf. I would think the “contributions” the boyfriend is making would need to be listed there.

yeah, that is what I was thinking as well.
