WTG Bissou! I believe I have become negative compulsive about finishing those forms…how many days until February 1? Good for anyone who has them done!

HA, cellomom! Something I learned this weekend that I probably shouldn’t tell you…it seems that the date is a suggestion. Shenandoah stated that the forms can be sent after the due date, and looking at other school’s financial aid pages it seems to be the same. I’m sure that there’s more aid money received if the forms are filed as early as possible. At least that’s my hope.

I am terrible with number, transpose them all the time, so I am paralyzed by the FAFSA. I’m usually an early bird with paper work but I am dreading this process. I still haven’t received my W2, so I haven’t even made the appt. with the accountant. I told myself I would do the FAFSA tomorrow. Son has one CSS school, and I haven’t even looked at that form yet. I told my husband he will be reviewing the numbers before I hit the submit button. I know the info will need to be updated when we have the 2013 form done, but what about the cash in the accounts, investments, etc.? Do I update that information when I plug in the 2013 figures?

entertainersmom, you can do the FAFSA now before your W2s come in, or you can wait until you get your W2s and your 2013 tax returns are complete. I actually do that as it’s easier. However, you have to do the return asap. Will your accountant be able to turn it around quickly? Once you have the tax returns in hand, the FAFSA is very easy. If you transpose the numbers, could you get someone else to enter the numbers? Could your husband or son/daughter do this?

If you have any change in finances including different numbers in accounts, you simply update the FAFSA. It’s not terrible. It’s really the CSS that’s awful. Big congrats on finishing already, bisouu!

connections - “It’s the CSS that’s awful”, lol! I think I will go ahead and enter last years tax info and then update. I started the FAFSA, but when it came to the accounts info, I started to dither. Tomorrow is D-day!!!

Congratulations to all who have slayed the FAFSA and CSS Beast!

Someone correct me if I’m wrong but I believe you can hand in the FAFSA as late as you want for governmental aid, but the college may have used up all the aid it has left (and you might not get any) if you wait too long to hand in the FAFSA. I thought many of the schools do not come up with needs-based aid until you’ve completed the FAFSA. I believe the early bird gets the worm.

Yes, Bethsmom, it’s important to submit the forms by the deadline. But in most cases, you don’t have to submit extra early. As long as you submit by the deadline you should be fine. If you miss the deadline, it’s still ok. Just submit as early as you can. You can definitely submit and then correct the FAFSA when your 2013 return is finished.

To my knowledge, no school comes up with need based aid until the FAFSA is submitted, and, if CSS is required, until that is submitted too.

Lol, I submitted!!
Of course I was so consumed with entering the numbers correctly that I didn’t realize until I submitted that I had only listed seven schools! I know I can go back and enter three more and if I understand correctly, after the 2013 numbers are submitted and I receive confirmation that the schools have received the updated info, I may then delete schools and add the other three, right?

I’m right there with you enterainersmom…I forgot to list the correct amount owing on my home…I hope I can go back and adjust that later (I think that is for the CSS) I’m so confused…bring on the wine

I hope that was on the CSS because I was just thinking I didn’t answer anything like that on the FAFSA LOL…Corona with a lime please.

Still procrastinating, make mine a margarita on the beach…

The CSS requires far more details! That’s why adult beverages are a necessity afterwards. That, ibuprofen and a nap!!

I think the house question must be on the CSS, I “saving” the CSS until after this Unifieds weekend.

THe FAFSA needs to be submitted as soon as possible. Some of the funding is first come so if you wait you may be missing out. My D had to submit three CSS to NYU, Columbia, and Tulane.

Of the schools I did list, I made sure to include the super expensive ones. I’ll add the others tomorrow.

FAFSA done & submitted!!! (little happy jig)

now the CSS (HUGE sigh!!!)

YAY, cellomom! One down, one to go!

yah, but it was the easy one…

Ugh. Jealous. I actually already did the CSS (had to for one of my son’s EA schools) but to do the FAFSA I have to do my taxes which I’m sitting here working on. Except I’m clearly not working very hard because I keep finding things to do instead like type this! I’m remembering myself saying to my son all fall, “just looking at the applications will not get them done.” Gosh I was annoying.

You can submit FAFSA with last year’s tax data - and then just file an update when your taxes are completed. (This is what we do every year - as we own our own business - and therefore always owe taxes… and are therefore not interested in filing earlier than April 15!)
