Fafsa

I’ve got Accepted To Shippensburg University among other schools like Boise State and WVU and I chose that school because it was closer to home and cheaper even though I still have to pay out of state tuition but My mom gets disability through SSI and told me that she doesn’t file her taxes so on her portion of my Fafsa she put not going to file. I was wondering if that would affect anything or I would juss have to have forms from the university to fill out verifying it.

My estimated Fafsa was around $12,000

No,way to answer this question in full. A lot depends on the colleges and their policies for awarding need based aid.

In terms of federally funded aid, if your total family income is what you reported…you would likely get a $5900 Pell Grant, a $5500 loan, and whatever grant aid might be available in your state.

From your other thread…

You are doing these forms NOW??

Which parent do you live with?

On his/her other thread EFC is $12k. Some pieces of the puzzle are missing or wrong.

The $12k is not My efc, that was the total estimated amount of money that they told me I was eligible for from Fafsa.

I used to live with my dad Buhh now I live with my mom

WhT do you mean your estimated FAFSA was around $12,000? Is that your EFC?

If so, something doesn’t sound right if your only income is SSI of your mom. Is her SSI taxed or untaxed?

How much in financial aid do you think is possible to get if my total household income was less than $30,000 which came form disability such as SSI

OK…one thread…that will be easier!

  1. The cost of attendance for OOS students at shippensburg is $35,000 a year...or so. If you get the $12,000 the fafsa says you will get...how would you fund the additional $23,000?

You are an OOS student for this school. Their first obligation is to fund their instate students. The school does NOT meet full need for all accepted students.

How is this affordable for you?

  1. Is your mom's income taxed or untaxed?
  2. Does your mom receive spousal support?
  3. Will your dad contribute anything towards your college costs?
  4. It sounds like you got a full Pell Grant of $5900 and the $5500 federally funded loan.
  5. What IS your financial aid package from shippensburg? Do you have it?

ETA…did you apply to any instate public universities in YOUR state where you could commute from home? If not…why?

It’s not affordable for me ig.
2. Untaxed
3. No
4. Nope
5. Yeah I do
6. They’re still waiting to receive it from Fafsa, it takes a couple days to process
7. I don’t want to go to any schools in my state

I don’t wanna have to commute, I plan to live on campus. And as far as paying for college since I know financial aid won’t pay for most of it or all of it, I’ll be taking out loans

Where will you get an additional $23k in loans for the first year and next 3 years after that? Who or what will lend that to you or your disabled parent? What’s your intended major?

Rowan or Stockton, or a Rutgers branch are at least academically comparable to Shippensburg.
If you qualify for full Pell, you would also get NJ TAG if you stay instate.

I understand wanting to go away, but it is not financially possible for you.

The OOS tuition, fees, room and board at Shippensburg is at least $27,000 (with a discount if SAT is high enough).

Pell and student loan only covers about $11,500.

You cannot borrow the other $16,000 on your own. You also need books, transportation, money for incidentals.

If you go to an instate school, with Pell, loan, TAG, work earnings you might be able to live on campus.

^are you a NJ resident?

Most OOS publics don’t have the money to give nonresidents meaningful aid. I don’t think you’re going to get $23k/year from this school and you can’t borrow it. What are your other options?

If your mom is on disability…with a very low income…WHO is going to take out $23,000 a year in loans for you to live at Shippensburg? Who? You already HAVE the $5500 federally funded loan in your financial aid package. Any loans above that amount will need to be either taken out by your mom, or cosigned by her. She does NOT have the income to support $23,000 a year in loans.

ETA…$100,000 in loans for four years at Shippensburg as an OOS student is insane.

You need to look at affordable options in your own state. Then after you have a degree and a job, and hopefully only a manageable amount of loans, you can move wherever.

Agreeing with the others. You may need to reevaluate.
