Fafsa

Wondering if anyone knows anything about aid for a dependent who is pregnant? Baby will be here late spring and daughter may or may not live at home. I would assume that since she has a dependent she will be applying as independent. Any info is greatly appreciated.

It is more than just having a child. She must be providing at least 50% of the support for her child for her to be considered an independent for FAFSA.

How schools verify or judge this may vary. There was a student who posted a few weeks back who had had no problem being considered independent at her CC for financial aid. When she transferred to a bigger school they would not consider her as independent because she could not show income that they considered made it possible for her to be providing 50% of her child’s support.

here is a link to the thread I mentioned above

She can actually count the child in the household size BEFORE it is born — but the issue is whether that household will be the student’s (independent) or the parent’s (dependent). As I mentioned in the thread in swimcatsmom’s link, we look at ability to provide. If the student has no income, no public assistance, lives with someone who pays the bills (including a boyfriend) … then the student is clearly not supporting her child at least 50% … someone else is supporting the child.
