Fahsa and Non custodial parent contribution

As far as applying for Financial Aid and FAHSA, most schools require a Non-Custodial Contribution Form to be filled out by the parent that is not the custodian. My parent is out of the picture and we have not spoken in 2 years despite paperwork. Is there a way to get a form for an absence parent?? Please please, answer this!

FAFSA and FAFSA only schools do not require any information from the non custodial parent.

If you are applying to schools that require CSS or their own financial aid forms then some of them will want noncustodial parent information. If the noncustodial parent is unwilling to supply the information then you will have to ask each school what they would require for a non custodial waiver. Some may waiver the requirement where you can prove extenuating circumstances such as that the non custodial parent has been completely out of the picture for a considerable time - no child support, no contact etc. Only the school can tell you what they require and whether they will grant a waiver.

Waivers are not easily come by or everyone would do it. Make sure you have some FAFSA only schools in the mix.

I have experience with this, as D applied to 2 CSS schools, Syracuse and Cornell(she is going to Cornell). She (I) had to complete a request to waive form, available from each of her schools websites. In her case, she had only seen her father once (briefly at a funeral for her grandfather) in the past 6 years. Lucky for us, he left a trail of bad debt, judgements, and sheriff sales, which I carefully kept record of. In addition, he served jail time for being years behind on child support. When I sent in the waiver forms, I also copied all of his judgements, sheriff sale papers, etc. and sent along. D also got a letter from her school’s guidance counselor stating that he was not involved in her life in any way. (A minister or psychologist, etc would also work in saying that your parent is not involved.) Anyway, we had no problem with either school in waiving the noncustodial parent info - I guess they knew the amount of debt d’s father accumulated would only sink my income and make them give out more FA. Good luck, and if you have any questions, feel free to ask.
