About a month ago I got back my scores back from the nys regents exam, and I found out that I failed my Chemistry and Geometry regents. Although I am planning on retaking them this upcoming week, I’m wondering if failing 2 regents affects the probability of being accepted to any college.
I also don’t feel confident that I’ll pass this upcoming Geometry regents,
How were the grades you got in the class all year? If your report card grades were ok and it was just that you failed the regents, you can recover from this. SUNY schools are the only ones who might look at your Regents grades.
I do know the Geometry regents is very difficult. I’m sure Chemistry is too. I know this doesn’t help you but NYS is considering eliminating Regents completely. Between the Common Core taking over the Regents exams and doing away with the Regents Diploma so now all students have to take the Regents, it’s been a debacle. Colleges will be aware that the Regents have become controversial.
Do your best and press on. If you can’t pass the regents you may need to get a tutor. Your school should be offering your some support to get through these exams. Talk to your guidance counselor for help if you need it.
OK, the big question: you’ve passed the Algebra I Regents, right? And you’ve already passed a Science-- say, Earth Science or Bio, right? So either way you’re on track to get a Regents Diploma, even if the Advanced Diploma is off the table?
Needless to say, passing looks better than failing. But there’s lots of good news. Like the fact that, since we’re the only state with a Regents type of exam, lots and lots of colleges don’t particularly care about Regents. If I recall correctly, some SUNYs use your Algebra grade to determine which math course you’re qualified for, but that’s no big deal. And the fact that it’s Geometry, not Algebra, means you’re probably in decent shape for Algebra II & Trig in the fall. (The class, not necessarily the Regents. )
Let’s go out on a limb and assume that you’re not planning a STEM major. I think you’ll be absolutely OK without those two Regents. (That said, they’re this week. Prep as much as you can, especially for Chem, since you seem to indicate that your odd are better with that one.) But once this week is over, I would relax a bit.
Both of my older 2 kids were low B average kids, and neither had the Advanced diploma, and both are enrolled in college. Both got acceptances from some SUNYs.
Assuming that you’re taking Algebra II & Trig in the fall, I would suggest that you spend a little time reviewing the life out of factoring for the fall. This course moves QUICKLY, pretty much a topic a day. Returning to school with a good handle on factoring will make a HUGE difference in next year’s math grades.
Can anyone explain what a regents/ regents exam is? I have never heard of this. Is it some sort of test for a non U.S. Country?
They’re a series of tests that NY High school kids have to take in order to get a NY diploma. There are actually 2 diplomas-- the regular Regents and the Advanced. As I stated above, a regular Regents diploma is sufficient to get you into college.
It’s really just a subject test given out by the state of New York.
I averaged pretty decent grades in both classes, I think my year round average was about a 85 for both classes.
