I got an F in AP Bio for the second marking period. I am under a lot of emotional distress. Many factors influenced why I got this grade, not pure laziness, or senioritis. I know that the grade will show to colleges, as my transcript lists marking period grades, as well as midterm/final exam.

I dont know what to do at this point.

One friend suggested that I should email my colleges, and take responsibility for the grade. In the email, I should talk about why I got the grade, how I feel, and what the future will be like. Apparently doing something is better than doing nothing in this situation. If I were to send an email, I was going to ask for a probationary period. i.e Please see my third marking period grades. I KNOW I will not get an F again But decisions come on by April 1st, and the marking period ends the 2nd week of April. I know this probationary period will only work if I am waitlisted

Another friend suggested I do nothing. Although an email, wont necessarily notify colleges as they will most likely see the grade, I might be doing more damage than good. In my email, through my words, I might come out as a weak person.

Please Help! What should I do? Email, no email OR DOES any other option exist for me at this point?

For 2 colleges I am a bio major ;(, and for the other three I picked economics if this matters. My SAT 2000 My gpa 9-11 about 3.6ish un-weighted out of 4.

I appreciate any responses! Thank You for your advice!

@Rmrz93 Yeah we are in the same situation. Hopefully these grades don’t break our chances at some schools.

@futurepresident I don’t necessarily suck at bio. A grade in a high school class should not be an indicator of that. With that being said… I picked bio major as it might be the path to med school. I didn’t take bio last year lol I dropped out within the first week, because I wanted to take other AP’s my junior year.

@Anyone what should I do? Email or No Email?!

You know the answer. Send an email. They will see that you got an F, there is no overlooking it. Better to write an honest letter than to do nothing. As long as the letter is not hugely self serving or filled with flimsy excuses, it’s better than nothing. Go write.

I am in the same boat as you as well. I failed IB Film Making for my 2nd marking period.

Some things to consider though:

-Discuss with the teacher that failed you to change the “F” to an imcomplete. An incomplete looks worlds better than an “F”. If you were during all your work and giving it a lot of effort they may be willing. If you were just being lazy do not ask your teacher for this.

-Are you passing for the semester? I’ve heard that this can play a rather big role in what colleges think. I failed the 2nd quarter, but I have a “C” for the semester in the class. Check up on that, you may be passing.

-Talk to your guidance counselor, they may be able to help you. Explain to them how you got the grade and they can write a comment when you send in your transcript to the colleges. This can be very helpful if you a valid reason as to why you failed.

Hope everything goes according to plan for you, I know how stressed you are right now, believe me.

If you get an F in bio in HS, you’ll never last in college biology which is MUCH harder! Schools will see you got an F in biology and reject you for being stupid enough to pick bio as your major when you can’t even PASS it in high school.

just to update any nervous people out there… i ended up doing absolutely nothing.
Got accepted to all schools I applied to (NYU, BU, NEU, UMiami, UMich, Penn State, Drexel, Rutgers, TCNJ, Uconn, wake forest, UNC CH, etc.) Got rejected from USC, UCLA though…

People on CC really need to calm down.

A F does look bad, but its not the end of the world… Its better to get one before you apply, then after you get accepted (for fear of getting rescinded) :p.

Got a 75 final grade in AP Bio.
Current have As in Chem 1, and Bio 1 First Sem of college

Good for you man, this was a great story to read especially from my position. I currently have a D in AP Macro Econ and can only hope + pray that for this quarter I’ll get a C or B (had a B- last quarter). Some people have forgotten how overwhelming senior year can be with AP classes, college applications, and some form of a social life!

Thanks again for your story, now I have the hope to know things will be okay!
