Failed a Class 1st semester of college and low gpa

Hi. I took 16 credits worth of classes and only received 13. I failed one class. My gpa is 1.99 now. I'm nervous and worried that it's too low and I'm screwed. What happens next after you fail a class and I have such a low gpa. And does failing a class really hurt you in the long run. Any advice from people similar situation? Thanks. Very stressed and ponder about dropping out sometimes.

Well, there are many things that factor into what to do next…

First, was this class a prerequisite for any required courses? If so, you’d need to repeat the course.

Second, if it isn’t required look into either removing the course off of your transcript or replacing the courses grade by retaking a similar course for credit.

A failing grade does drag you down. I can only imagine how much it’s going to drag your grade down since I saw the damage a C- did to my GPA. (I’m only in my first semester, however.)

If you choose to keep the F, then you must strive to get the best grades possible knowing that you need to bring your GPA way up.

That sucks dude, sorry you’re going through this! :frowning:

Depending on your school, you may be put on academic probation and possibly given the option to retake the class. Retaking may not remove the F from your transcript but if you improve, your GPA will be a bit better. Failing a class doesn’t have to hurt you too badly if it isn’t a class required for your major or you significantly improve your performance in subsequent semesters.

My ex was put on AP a few years ago and the “worst” things that happened was that he couldn’t participate in his fraternity and lost a scholarship (but only because he didn’t improve enough the following semester).

Since there’s nothing you can really do about it at this point, I suggest doing some de-stressing activities and taking it easy while you have a break. When you return next semester, see if you can arrange a meeting with your advisor and come up with a game plan for improving. :)

Grade replacement.

See your schools policy on it. At my school you can retake a class and the new course will replace the grade. The old grade will not factor into GPA at all, but the problem is that the lower grade will still appear on the transcript.

I think many schools have a very similar policy, so you may want to look into that. It is required? Do you think if you took it again you could get a passing grade?
