So I just got back my grades for this semester and I failed algebra, I passed everything else. honestly this semester was hard on me because I took 3 writing intensive courses, idk how i manage to pass lol. but im a CS major and I honestly can’t see myself doing nun else expect CS but my math is the only problem. I feel really stupid failing algebra honestly but im working on getting better at math, the funny thing is that Coding is easy but the math aspect of CS SMFH, i gotta try again at math. everyone is telling me if i can’t pass it then do something else but idk what else to do. I would like to go into Mobile App Dev or Network Security.
Don’t give up!!! Retake the class and fix whatever went wrong. Look into university tutoring services, and check out khan academy for help. Evaluate your study methods, because studying for math is different than most other classes.
Math really isn’t that hard if you have the right study methods.
Also, before you start a math class, ask the professor for the syllabus and self-study the concepts online before class to give yourself a head-start. Doing this will make you less overwhelmed when the class starts.
Hope I can help!
@Savage101 I got a D in it, idk if that’s passing or not but tmr im going in to see about it and yeah I’ll deff talk to the proff before it starts, i never thought about that honestly. thank you very much
Even if the school will technically let you move on, it might benefit you to retake the class – you need solid algebra knowledge for precalc, calc 1, and beyond.
@bondangles yeah I will deff take it over if i can, I gotta go see what I need to do
I agree. Definitely either retake it or re-learn the material that was in the algebra 1 syllabus. Math is like a pyramid- if you do not have a solid foundation in algebra (the base of the pyramid), you won’t be able to handle/support the top of the pyramid (Calculus). I’m glad I helped.
I would retake, and possibly reconsider major. CS is a very computationally-intensive field. It doesn’t matter if your end goal is mobile app development - you still have to go through the basic undergrad CS curriculum, and that usually goes all the way up to Differential Equations and Multivariable Calculus.
If you don’t find yourself excelling this second time around, I would change majors to something relevant (perhaps design) and take CS as a minor.
I agree – failing algebra in CC is not a good sign for a CS major.
There’s a simple solution to that problem. I suck at math too and I’m a computer professional. Go for a degree in Information Technology. It’s just as employable as CS without all the mathematical torture.
i know it’s been a while but I passed it and now i’m n college level math and taking pre calc now
Good for you! Get help as needed, find a buddy to study with. You can do it.
