Hey CC,

Will a failed class which I'm retaking this quarter affect my admission standing? Note that this is a non-major / non-required class that I'm retaking. They also only have my Fall 2010 grades and not Winter 2011 grades so they don't know I failed this class.

SIR's are due June 1st and my quarter ends around June 25th. Any thoughts?

Thanks for your response.

My son was a first-time freshman and had a grade issue. I recommend calling into admissions and advising them on the circumstances. When you call, they will transfer you to an admissions agent who can bring up all your transcript details and advise you as to what you can do or how much of a problem it will/won’t be. My son found them to be understanding and helpful. The best answer he got was that it probably wouldn’t be a problem, but they’d have to wait and see how much it affected his GPA. It only moved his down by .05, so it didn’t move him below the eligibility cut-off. He did have to wait until everyone’s final transcripts were reviewed, which was mid-July if I remember correctly, but it lower the stress level quite bit for him to have an unofficial answer.

thanks for the response otc2010,
even though I have failed my class my GPA is significantly higher from this year than what i used to have so it’ll actually bring up my composite GPA still (if that makes sense).

I’ll def. give them a call and i’ll post a response.

Since I was offered admission to a few other CSU campuses (fullerton / la to be exact) I e-mailed them and this was their response:

CSULA
“If the course does not interfere with our requirements to apply, and if you have calculated your GPA with the Calculus II course and it still meets are requirements, you should be fine. Please make sure that you let our Office of Admissions know of your Calculus grade, their contact number is (323) 343-3901.”

CSUF
Thank you for informing us about your grade in your Calculus II course. As long as you complete 60 transferable units, complete the Golden Four courses with a C or better before summer, and maintain your GPA, then your grade in this course should not jeopardize your admission status. Let us know if you have any further questions.

CSULB doesn’t seem to have a e-mail address (i prefer e-mail correspondence than phones) but since I’m sick today I wont be able to call them. Will post a future update on csulb but i have a strong feeling they’ll say the same exact thing.

I noticed you mention they only have your Fall 2010 grades and not your Winter 2011 grades in your initial post. How can this be? Did they not ask for official transcripts from you around Feb-March? If so, your Winter 2011 grades should have been in there if I’m not mistaken.

@bowlhead, My opinion is you should be fine as long as you pass the class this qrt. befor submitting your final transcripts.

@monkeylion

I sent my transcripts through the official transcript service and they should’ve received it.
However, most of my admissions decision was based on my 2 years at a CC closer to CSULB.

(I finished 54 semester units there before moving to a cc on a quarter system) Essentially I’m only taking my last “required” class which was the SPeech although this quarter i’m taking Business Proficiency class and a Ethics (part of CBA requirements)

Anywhoos since its provisional, my OFFICIAL transcripts + spring 2011 grades must be sent so they’ll say the final yes / no at that point.

@risingsun13 i emailed a counselor and they said its not required so it’s okay. D’s and F’s in retakes arent reccomended as this will lower your gpa so its better to withdraw.

However word of caution. Dropping this class for the second time or failing can have implications beyond your control in the future in ways you may not have foreseen … so try and pass it the second time. I’m actually withdrawing cause i cannot handle the coursework in my calc II class and my other 2 classes and 25 hours of work every week \ ( // _ \ ) /
