I did pretty well in HS while in HS I enrolled in Dual Enrollment and took classes a the local Community College. While in HS and Dual enrollment I was picked up in a career in the entertainment industry and traveled throughout Europe and Asia. So I transferred to a distance learning got my HS Diploma while working. Not withdrawing from the classes at the Community college I didn't know I had to I was 16 received 3 Fs. I came back after my careers "seasons" overseas were done and lived in NYC attained a real bad drug addiction at 17 years old..... my parents made me move back home at 18 and go to community college. Kept my drug addiction going at home managed some how to get 2 Cs 1 Withdraw as pass and an F. Went back to NYC got a job on the management side of my industry did well got clean but then decided I was depressed got my doctor to prescribe me koladapins and adderal.... went off my rocker..... lost my job had to move back home with my parents.... got back into school first semester made straight As with 15 hours no drugs no alcohol!! I really get school now I love learning for once in my life. I am about to finish 1st mini session of summer school getting straight As 13 hours. I plan on taking 17 hours this fall and continuing my straight A path and 18 in the spring. This December I should have a 3.42 GPA not counting the replaced 4 fs on my transcript and a 2.95 with the four Fs Calculated. Will these latter years make up for my past? Also I am in SGA and trying to be the founder of a German Club.

Do I have any chance of getting into a school like UNC??? Any help would be very much appreciated. Please be honest as of the new me nothing can ever set me back or put me down I can overcome any obstacle

OP, your story brought a tear to my eye. Congratulations on such a fantastic turn around. I can’t answer your question about UNC, but I review applications, including transcripts, from students for another reason, and I can tell you, I am always thrilled and impressed to see someone who has taken a fall (or more than one) and then picked themselves up.

You present yourself well: you sound driven and honest about things, and humbled. You will likely need to tell your story a lot, both in writing and in interviews. I would say you should try and get some on campus interviews with an admissions officer at the schools of interest to you, well before you will be applying to see how they see your chances, to hear their advice about how to get yourself prepared for a transfer to their school, and to “grease the skids” a bit so that your application is treated well when it comes through the system.

The most important thing you can do now is to stay clean, and to carry through with those goals you’ve put out there.

Again, congratulations and best wishes as you move forward. Keep in touch and let us know how this goes for you.

According to the UNC admissions website, admitted transfer students had, on average, a 3.15 GPA. So, without counting the F grades, you are well above the average. Plus, most schools look favorably on an upward grade trend, especially in the transfer admission process. With your story, which I am sure you will have the opportunity to tell, and your current grades, I believe you have a significant chance at being admitted, as long as you continue your success.

But I am not admission officer, so take my words with a grain of salt.

Thank you very much for the help. I will most certainly go to the schools and talk to Admissions as this seems to be the consensus of everyone I talk to.
