failed out of college > took classes at CC > chances?

Hey guys,

Sooo I failed out of college after doing my freshman year at a private, top 40 university. I think my GPA was something around a 1.5 ... idk it was really bad.

Then, I took classes at my CC. My GPA is around a 3.3 right now - it will be higher (I hope) after this semester is over. I have gotten A's in 'core' classes... English, Stats, etc. I have worked practically full time; one of my jobs is a very impressive internship.

Where should I even apply? I'm applied to some CA state schools. Where else should I apply? I was thinking of TCU (Texas Christian). Someone please suggest schools that would take me?

Thanks :-)

*edit I live in the Bay Area in CA

Make an appointment with the transfer counselors at your CC, and ask them for their advice. They’ve helped lots of students just like you get their lives on track.

Good luck!

I tried to do that, but the counselor told me that “I was doing good” and “shouldn’t worry too much - try to apply where you wanna go”

Aside from the incorrect grammar and saddening colloquialism, this was not helpful and only left me more discouraged. :-(

CC counselors really range widely in quality. Some barely know anything beyond helping a student transfer to the local ho-hum state university down the street and have no ability to encourage, empathize, dream or support a non-traditional student. You need to knock on the next counselor door office, and the next and the next until you DO find a counselor who is able to understand your unique situation.

It is getting kind of late in the process – you could apply to SCU Arts & Sciences with a 3.3. Also Mills (if you are a woman) or St. Mary’s of California (in Moraga). If your essay is good, now that you have proven yourself at the CC, many solid privates would consider you. Also look at publics in Oregon, including UO or Arizona publics.

What is your major? What kind of UG experience do you want?

umm late in the process? most schools’ apps are due in March… any other suggestions? I just want to apply to as many schools as possible so I get in SOMEWHERE.

Here is the kind of info. that should be available for you through your CC transfer office [MC Transfer Scholarship Page](http://www.montgomerycollege.edu/Departments/studev/schol.htm) See if any of it applies to you, print out the stuff that is useful, and then take it along with you when you follow annikasorrensen’s advice. Your CC may not have the same kind of budget for publishing transfer info. as this CC does, but somewhere they have that same kind of data buried in their files. If you ask (and ask and ask, but politely please!!) they should be able to find it for you.
