Failing a Class Not in my Major - Should I be worried?

Hello everyone, I recently changed my major from Computer Science to Business. The reason I did this was because I found out I don’t enjoy programming. And now I’m stuck with this programming class that’s not required for my new major. I’m know I’m not going to pass this class and it’s going to take a hit into my gpa. However, my gpa is currently around 3.7 and I’m taking a load of other classes that I’m doing well in.
So, should I be stressing over failing a class not in my major? Or do you guys/girls think I’ll be okay?

Is it too late to withdraw from the class? Maybe that could be an option, if it doesn’t endanger your financial aid or your GPA.

Best option would be to withdraw (if not too late and you still have full time credits). Another option to explore is to see if your school has a pass / no credit option. Maybe you can complete enough work to earn a D (= pass), so you don’t take a GPA hit.

Thank you for the replies. Unfortunately, it’s too late to withdraw or change to a credit / no credit option.

So yes, be worried. F’s really bring down your GPA. Get a tutor asap to help you. Talk to the professor during office hours.

By withdrawal, we mean “taking a W”. This is different than just dropping the class. You should usually be allowed to get out of a class for a W at any time during the semester. After the drop/add period expires, you can submit a formal request to withdraw from the class and have a W show up on your transcript. It doesn’t look good to employers, but it looks a helluva lot better than an F.

What school do you go to? Look up their policies.

I think there is a certain date you have to withdraw by too. Talk to your adviser ASAP!

It varis by school. Some schools will give you a WF (withdrew failing) at this point.

If you can’t withdraw, you have two main options:

a. Fail the class. Don’t show up, or at least do so poorly that you get the F. This way, you can retake the class in the future to replace the grade on your transcript. (NOTE: At most schools, you really must get the F. Even a D- won’t let you retake it to replace the grade).

b. Pass the class. Look at the syllabus/grade distribution to see if you can raise your grade to a C or better by the end of the semester. Talk to the professor or TAs to see what you can do to improve. If you do this ASAP, they will be more likely to help you than if you wait till closer to finals. Perhaps stop by the academic resource center or see tutors for this particular subject.
