I recieved two D's in an econ class. I retook it at another cc for the third time and recieved an A. my problem was that i took it online the first two times. i have a pretty high gpa, unless those 2 first grades count in my gpa. when i apply to transfer to a uc does that bring down my gpa ? and how bad does it look on my application?

I'd need more information to give you an accurate attempt at an answer.

First, what's your intended major? This is important because if you failed a chemistry class and you are a philosophy major it will matter less.
Second, what class did you fail? When did you take these classes? This is important because if there is a signifigant gap in between the bad and good grades the damage would be less. Also, if you could establish a strong upward grade trend that is helpful.
Third what's your "high" gpa, specifically? Important to see how low your gpa goes with the F's.
Fourth, which UC's are you looking to get into? This is important because different UC's have different standards. Berkeley will care more about this than say UCR.

Regardless, I think you could definitely work your way out of this if this is your only real bad course grade. Until I know more information, I'd say that as long as you get really good grades in the Fall your shot should still be alive. I believe that at least 1 of your F's will get washed away with the 'A' grade, but I'm not sure about the second F. I've found that Berkeley and LA can be quite understanding if you have a very strong academic record otherwise, especially if you have some compelling soft factors like good extracurriculars and work experience. Definitely don't get discouraged, your shot is very much alive if your gpa is high and you do all the pre-reqs.

sachin,
my major is communication and i failed micro economics. i took the three classes within three semesters. i do have an upward trend as my grades started mostly b's with the two d's to mostly a's and some b's. with out the two d's i have around a 3.5. i am looking into uc davis and ucsb. i am just concerned if i include these two d's in my gpa. i really appreciate your help. thank you!

Sorry for the late reply, I was out of town so my internet access was limited.

I think your shot at these schools is still very much in reach. First, communications does not really require economic mastery. Second, the communication major isn't especially difficult to get into relative to schools like UCLA. Third, with a strong Fall academic performance you'll be able to essentially put to rest any doubts on your academic ability for admissions officers at those respective schools.

My recommendation would be to sign some sort of TAG with UC Davis or UCSB to guarantee your admission into one of your top choices. I've heard better things about the UCSB communication program so definitely do email their advisers for more information.

Good luck and I'm sure it will all work out nicely.
