Hi, so I recently got accepted to UCI for fall 2016. For the sake of being a full time student I’m currently taking trig, which is a non-transferable class here at my CC, and there is another class which is a UC transferable class that I really wanted to focus on rather than working on this class. Would it be a lot of harm if I were to just fail the class and focus on my other class?
If you fail the class, you would not be going to UCI.
really? even if it isnt transferable to UCs?
People with 4.0’s get turned down by all the UC’s. Why do you think you should be able to just take it easy this semester and “just a fail a class?”
Do you think a student with an F on his or her most recent transcript deserves to go to a UC? I don’t.
You should have a contract. Most say not to fail a class.
Hey @vincenttngo1 This was back in 2012 so I’m not sure if the UCs are tougher on this subject but one of my ex girlfriends was failing a non major required class after the drop date right before transferring to UCI. It was a programming course and she was a psych major. She talked to the professor and got an incomplete, sent in her transcripts in June just like everyone else with an “I” next to the course and she did not get any trouble from them. If memory serves me right, she never even went back to take that programming class though ( she wasn’t the brightest) and an incomplete grade becomes a F grade after a year. UCI wouldn’t care but it would screw you over for graduate school. So if you do choose to do that, I recommend you go back to finish the course even if you think you’ll get a C or D.
I don’t think it’ll do any harm at all… Non-transferable courses do not affect your chance at UCs.
seems like a lot of mixed answers. My intention is not to fail this class, I don’t want to, its just the worst case scenario because I do have to prioritize my other class more and it just so happened that both classes have exams and projects due on the same day, so its a little tough to balance out both with the amount of time I have
@vincenttngo1 Dude, read your contract.
Mine says: “I agree to complete all UC-transferable courses in the Winter and/or Spring 2016 terms with a 3.0 or higher GPA and no grade lower than a C.”
An F, I’m getting rescinded. Below a 3.0, I’m getting rescinded.
I know you said non-transferable, but if I failed a class I really have a hard time thinking I’d still be admitted.
This is a rather interesting question as to the extent of how much precise wording plays a role in admissions. Technically, they do only care about UC-transferable coursework, but OTOH an F on a transcript is hard to ignore. I can’t honestly say whether they’ll have grounds to rescind you for it, but I would never in a million years dream of risking it.
Also, to add to @UCmathematics response, I also have a friend who transferred to Cal and for a class in Fall before transfer, took an Incomplete that didn’t affect her admissions. And it was in a transferable class (English Lit, she was an anthro major and it wasn’t required) She transferred Fall 2013.
Also @falltransfer1 your comment is quite rude and presupposes a lot about the OP. We don’t know what circumstances caused them to be in this situation and you shouldn’t assume their intention is simply wanting to “take it easy.” Your comment as to what you think the OP deserves was unwarranted, it’s not our place to judge the users asking questions on this site, merely to help them.
