Failing a P/F Class

Hello,

I am a current Columbia undergrad and have had some family issues since early November (e.g. mom suffering serious mental health issues and having to stay in my room, which has an extra bed, for a week). This severely impacted my academic performance, and I had to submit a petition to mark a course P/F past the deadline, which was approved. Looking at my grades on labs and exams in the class (absolutely horrid), there is a fairly high chance that I will end up failing the course. How bad will an F, rather than a P, look on my transcript? How does it compare to getting a D, which actually impacts your GPA?

Scratch what I said about an F not impacting your GPA; apparently, a grade of F does affect GPA. Is it counted the same as a normal letter grade F (i.e. a 0.0)?

Yes

If its possible to drop the class you might consider that. Or else take an incomplete. Do anything you can to avoid the F. You will have to retake the class later anyway, but it will show up on your transcript.

Anyway you should probably get over to your advisor right away and sort this out.
