I'm a HS Senior, good enough stats that UF is a reach but not out of reach, computers/engineering/math easy. Problem is I'm now failing Spanish 2, and yeah if you're saying why didn't I take Spanish undergrad it was because I knew I'd suck at language and I do. Got a D last year barely in Spanish 1, have to have two years same language or I'd never have taken Spanish 2. Only D ever, GPA is good.

If I fail which seems possible, I just don't get this and it may be too late to save the grade, can I take Spanish in a CC or something in summer and still be admitted to a state university in the fall?

I'm spending all my time trying to pass this language and I have a teacher who doesn't care because it's obvious I don't want to ever speak Spanish, so my AP classes are slipping to B's because I don't get homework done. I'd like to just retake with a different teacher but I'm running out of time. Anybody know what I can do to get into a state school at this point?

It definitely does not help your chances. I would apply to several state schools (UF,UCF, FSU, USF, UNF). The shotgun method is the most effective because college admissions can be very random. At this point, try to do really well on your Spanish final but more importantly keep your other grades up. Senior year grades don’t affect admissions to much, but at the same time you need to keep B+ average, otherwise, you draw the risk of your admission being rescinded if you do start getting straight C’s. A D in Spanish is not the end of the world, but try your best to get it up to a C. It will ‘protect’ you in the admissions process, because a D is often grounds for being rescinded.

thanks dracos. if i flunk this semester i know my chances for uf are gone but do i have to take it in cc before i’m admitted to any state school? i don’t need it to graduate and it won’t even kill my gpa at this point. it’s a prereq for admission as far as i read to a state university and i have only one year completed. appreciate the help.

If you fail it this semester; then take it online with FLVS. If you’re a florida resident it should be free.

WHen I took spanish through FLVS when I was in HS, I was able to get by using mostly a spanish translator. It’s a bit of a cheap way out; but desperate times call for desperate measures.

As far as I’m concerned, you need at least two years of the same foreign language to get into a state school in Florida. I would focus on getting a C in Spanish, so you do not have to take this course again. If you do not pass Spanish, I am pretty sure you have to pass it in order to get into a state school because the language requirement has to be met. I recommend that you try your best in Spanish 2. I took 4 years of spanish and an additional 2 years in spanish in college because I wanted to. Jumping from spanish 2 to college level spanish is not easy. If you’re not doing well in spanish 2, I do not recommend the college level course (unless you absolutely have to).
