Failing a Semester in Junior Year

Throughout my years of attending high school i have received As and Bs, yet, I was unable to work my way up in the second semester of precalculus. I have discussed with my counselor about what i should do, since summer school for precalculus is not available near my home, and she said to take an online course during senior year. I'm concerned whether the fail in my second semester of junior year will affect my acceptance into a university. Additionally, I'm concerned whether i will be able to pass the online course, since precalculus is not my cup of tea. I'm not sure what to do, and I'm very anxious since I've worked extremely hard, taking APs, etc. and I do not want this grade to affect my future substantially. Can anyone give me tips or suggestions as to what i should do? Will this fail substantially affect my acceptance into a university?

For highly competitive colleges it will. It’s part of your transcript.

This is probably the bigger issue. Why can’t you retake it in your senior year? I hope your GC is not recommending you take both precalc online and calc in school. That would be a disaster.

Right now, my sight is not set on highly competitive colleges. Coming from a family that has never attended college, I will be just as happy to attend a university with a high acceptance rate . The only reason I do not wish to retake the precalc class during my senior year is that the teacher who was teaching me precalc this year will be teaching the same subject again next year. A majority of students failed her class, first semester and second semester, due to her fast paced teaching and ridiculous standards. Other students who have other precalc teachers usually ask for my help, confessing to me that they do not understand a single topic, and yet, they are the ones receiving the better grades. Instead, I wish to take AP stats next year. I'm just extremely concerned that the fail from this semester will be detrimental to my acceptance into a general university, competitive or not. Additionally, I'm not sure whether the online precalc course will be any different from the teaching of my present precalc teacher which, again, concerns me.

Will your HS replace the failing grade with the online one?

Can you get a tutor? Can you get a book of practice problems and solutions?

I would work hard at it for the rest of this semester. See your teacher after school for help often, see if you can get a tutor (sometimes you can do this through the school at no cost with an honor society student), do extra problems etc.
