Hi. I am failing ap chemistry right now with a D. I have a final tomorrow, which i know i will fail because I don't understand a single thing on the review. I went to tutoring etc and chemistry is not for me because I just can't remember all the rules and things for chemistry. I did better in the beginning of the class, but now...

So if i get into UC santa cruz or something(I am in-state), are they going to rescind? I overloaded myself with classes. My schedule looks like this right now:
ap calc ab
ap chem
physics 1
history
(my school is on a weird schedule so 4 classes is the most you can take)

This will be my first failing grade. I've only had 1 C before in my entire high school career...Do I even bother applying to UCs or is there a chance they would not rescind me?

If colleges see that you’ve really only struggled in one certain area, they tend not to punish you for it as long as your major doesn’t have a lot to do with that subject. I’m awful at Math. I think I’ve had a B one year? The rest have been C’s. But good luck- I’m sure you’ll be fine.

ucsc/ucr/ucm might not rescind you. the other UCs most likely would. this depends mostly on your overall application when you were admitted and what your excuse is - you MUST notify the UCs if you get a failing grade in senior year. unfortunately, simply not understanding a subject is not a valid excuse.

Thanks everyone, I’m switching into regular chem so hopefully they’ll see that I am trying to make it up, and my intended major isn’t science so that’s good:).

@redteabag- so if not understanding it isn’t a valid excuse, what do I say to them? I also haven’t submitted my application yet, should I let them know on the application? my grades will be on transcript this week…

you might need to consult a school counselor and explain your personal effects that lead you to this situation. you’ll need to formulate an explanation that shows laziness was not the main factor. usually, an essay is dedicated to explaining an anomalous grade that admission officers can see on the application. your number one priority now is trying to receive a passing grade.

The past few years UC admissions have been tough, so while they may let an F slide they also may not. As pointed out, you will have to notify them at the end of this semester if you do not pass the class. Also be sure to check that you’ll still be UC eligible if you don’t pass the class (eg. you have enough science units without it). If you don’t meet the UC eligibility requirements without passing this class then its just about a sure thing you’ll be rescinded.
