I applied to Econ at most UCs for Fall 2009 entrance and was taking Calculus 1 as part of the pre-requisites this winter session (just ended this week). I think that I tanked the class and would probably get a D only. I’ve maintained 4.0 GPA in all semester for ~60 units. Questions:

Do I have to report to UCs if I get an D in this class even when the official update period ended already?

Is it going to severely impact my chance to get into any UC Econ program (I applied to UCLA, UCB, UCSB, UCI, UCD) if I get an D in Calculus at this point? Even if I’ve maintained good grades for all other classes and requirements? Should I contact the UCs and ask to retake if I get accepted?

Thanks in advance. I could not sleep ever since my final two days ago…

In either case you should retake Calculus I. If you did not complete any other math course that fulfills the math requirement in IGETC then you must take Calculus I again. You must get a C for each course that you are using for IGETC. Most people majoring in Econ at UCB and UCLA completed Calculus I and Calculus II, so you are at a disadvantage.

If you manage to get into Cal you should have at least Calculus I done otherwise you will not be able to declare econ major. Transfers must apply for the major in their first semester. Meaning all pre-reqs must be completed or in progress.

For UCLA, there is a high chance you are not going to be admitted:

Not too late to fix the problem. Take calculus one over this spring. Do not update until you finish spring semester. Hopefully u get an A and can say you forgot to drop during winter session. This will only work if your cc is on semester system and has a short late start calculus

Thanks for the comments. I'll try to re-take these classes and also potentially just re-apply with another major next semester. I don't think I have the courage to re-live the Calculus hell. Would there be a negative impact if I re-apply for Spring term with another major (e.g. communications)? Thanks.

If you are failing calculus it is probably because your algebra skills weren't strong enough. If you plan on waiting and reapplying, take a refresher algebra class and then retake calculus. Calc I should NOT be hard if you did good in algebra. If you got a A in algebra and then failed calc (and even had enough trouble that you don't want to retake it!) then something has gone horribly wrong. My suggestion is that you withhold judgement of calc until you have retaken algebra.

You probably should not just jump back in and retake calc.
