Failing class during semester prior transfer to UC

I am a Econ major student from community college planning on transfer to UC this fall semester, and I’m currently awaiting for the final decisions to be posted. On my UC application, I stated that I will be able to fulfil the IGETC pattern prior the transfer. However, for my current last spring semester, it is very likely that I won’t be able to pass my CHEM 3 class, which is considered as a laboratory science course in the IGETC requirement. So my thinking is to retake it during this summer. Will the UC schools be lenient enough to allow that? What is my chance of getting rescinded in this circumstances.

I think your best bet would be to contact the schools you applied to and let them know. Typically, they want everything finished in the Spring prior to transfer so it is possible it can make a difference. Contact the schools, let me know your situation before dropping or doing anything, and then you can decide from there. I hope everything gets sorted out for you! I’m also a transfer student who is planning to transfer to a UC this fall. Good luck!

You need to stay in front of this with UC. Don’t assume things will work out ok. UC says

If there are changes to your academic record: If you add or drop a course, fail to earn a C or better in a course or enroll in a new college after you submit your application, log back in and update your information online. If you receive an offer of admission, be sure to confirm with the campus admission office that they are aware of the deficient grade or schedule changes.

Keep in mind: We cannot guarantee that a campus can go back to review an application after correspondence has been received. Make sure to save a copy of your correspondence just in case.

I suggest you contact admissions at the UCs that offer admission prior to accepting an offer if it looks like you won’t pass the class. See if they can tell you what they will do. They may dodge giving an answer and say something like “each case is resolved on a case-by-case basis”, but its worth seeing if you can get an answer. I wouldn’t be surprised if it differs by campus.

BTW will you still have 60 units without this class? UC requires you to have the 60 units by the end of spring semester. Things have been strange with Covid this past year or so, maybe they will be more flexible and allow you to get to 60 including summer. But if you need this class to get to 60 be sure to mention it when you talk to UC.

I would also suggest getting the name of each person you talk to, then follow up each conversation with an email summarizing the call to ensure they agree with what you understood them to say, and also to get the conversation onto a more durable record.

Yes, I will still have 60 units without this class, but this class is counted as one of the igetc requirement for laboratory science.

BTW, Will the UC schools accept partial certification of IGETC?
