So i found out I have an F in ap chem. i haven't applied to colleges yet but i live in california and my uc gpa is 3.7 so im applying to some ucs. this is the only failing grade i have ever had and would it be better to have a withdraw/fail on my record or just keep going with a fail grade? theres no way i can pass this class. im not motivated, i can't memorize anything because i have bad memory to begin with, and i hate this class. I can't switch out without recieving an F.

im interested in majoring in math in college, would this hurt my chances? Really, I would be super lucky if I somehow got a D in this class. I can't understand ap chem at all and after numerous tutoring sessions and trying to self study i don't think its for me. i was going to switch into regular chem though, would that be better on my record?

I feel your pain. AP Chem is one of those classes where you can just be totally lost and fail the class despite being good at every other subject. The level of complexity is just insane.

If you’re sure that you’re going to fail based on the first few chapters, then I would drop while you can because it does NOT get better. The chapter on atoms is relatively easy, but that’s about it. Kinetics and Electrochem may look simple at first glance, but they really aren’t.

Gas Laws is probably the easiest chapter overall. Not sure if you’ve done that yet.

Can you drop without getting a W? If not, will going to regular Chem still leave you with a W?

Withdrawing would show as an F in my transcript…
I am trying but really i just hate this class so much and im not doing too well in my other classes either. Regular chem is not ap chem so i would still have a fail grade.
I dont know what happened. I have 2 Cs and 1 B along with this failing grade. I just cant handle all these aps im taking i guess…But i am able to pull the rest of the grades up at least but not chem…

always withdraw before taking an F, at least with the withdraw you can talk your way out of it. With an F you are just another student with an F

why not try and focus, get a tutor do whatever it takes to get a C> Life is full of things that are hard and boring. Give it a shot at least for the sake of your applications!

luvs2ski i think I’ll just try and get it up. From what i’ve read about Ds and Fs and UC schools I think its not exactly wise to drop with a fail grade. It’s not that bad of an F…it’s almost a D but thats just because my midterm was an F+ it brought my grade up…
Thanks for answering everyone

Get a tutor asap! Your school’s National Honor Society should have students that want the service hours (to meet requirements) and You NEED a tutor. It’s a great arrangement bc everyone benefits…and it’s free! I hated chemistry with a passion too, but you can turn this around. Start managing your time better in order to bring up your other grades as well. You have to pick it up and yes, do not withdraw if it leaves you with a F in transcript. And do the chapter readings and all homework assignments. Just have to state the obvious in case you are thinking you can get by without doing the readings!
