I know this may seem like another student failing college thread but my story is different and I feel like I’m the only one out here going through this but I still wanted to see if I can get advice. I am currently in my second semester of my second year in college. I started off as at 4 year public university. My fist semester I didn’t know how to deal with the whole college thing so I started taking classes that were too hard and essentially failed out the first semester. The next semester went a little better, I started off really good but I slowly started putting assignments to the side and not study at all for exams. So of course, another failed semester. I was placed on academic probation and it gave me a little push to start doing better. I’m going to give a little bit away from myself here but Hurricane Harvey hit us and school became delayed for me so I felt like everything was just out of balance. I had no clue was going on anymore by the time school started back up. I was missing assignments, failing exams, and I just had no motivation to go to class anymore. I ended up with all Fs and was put on suspension. I chose to attend community college to not fall behind. I’m not doing as bad a the previous semester but I had to drop a class due to my chances of failing and now I think I’m going to fail English because I’ve procrastinated for every assignment for this class. I’m scared that I won’t be admitted back to my university simply because I haven’t really shown much improvement. I’m tired of failing classes and I don’t know what to do anymore
In order to do better, you need to change what you are (or in this case arent) doing. There’s only one way do do well in college for most people. Attend every class, keep up and do every assignment, study for every exam, write every paper, finish every project.
Doesn’t seem like this story is any different than a typical ‘failing college student thread’. First, ask yourself: what exactly are you doing with the time you aren’t using to study and do work? Is this time worth doing what you’re doing? Procrastination cripples the college student, and laziness finishes you off. From the way you wrote your thread, it seems that your lack of work and studying stems from laziness. Do you actually want to do better? Or did you post this in a state of desperation for the current situation you are in? The answer to your problem is quite obvious, start doing the work you need to do. You should be spending upwards of 4 hours of your time a day on your work, especially if you are a current failing student. Just start doing the work you need to do, hand in your assignments in time - thoroughly completed with attention to detail, start getting your grades up. You should probably talk to your professors in person too about your academic status, and what you should do specifically to do better in their classes. Spend the time you have in college genuinely, or else it would all be wasted away for nothing.
Have you ever been evaluated for ADD/ADHD? If not, you may want to look into it as a possibility. If not that, make sure before you are too hard on yourself that it’s not something you can’t get a handle on alone. You may need help.
If you join a gym and just watch other people work out. Do a little here and there and then don’t go for a while. And wonder why your not in shape. Or it’s the gyms fault. But it’s ok keep paying for the privilege of not going.
Seriously. You must decide very quickly what is important. If you have a medical issue seek help. If you can’t concentrate etc. but if it’s effort only you hold the key to that door
A general education helps make you a well rounded person. It gives you things to think about and tools to make your life better.
