I have a serious problem. I am going to get a "D" in my Statistic course which is my math requirement for college. I have to retake it in the Spring. However, besides this "D" , all my grades since the beginning of college have been A's. Does this grade ruin my chance of acceptance to all colleges? (I applied to UCSD, UCLA, UCB, and UCD.) I'm am so worried right now.

I'm no expert, but I don't think any one "d" will ruin the college chances for anyone with straight a's. I think it would only be a huge deal for the flagship UC's or if your a math related major. I would not worry too much, especially as it is too late to change anything. Good luck!

not really certain but i think it may have seriously blown your chances for UCLA and Cal..... you in any TAGs or TAP?

whats your major BTW?

iono.. straight A's until now??? i think theres still hope

O btw make sure you let all schools know about the d and that you plan to retake it in the spring...that is critical.

Please consult with the UCs' admission officers immediately regarding this.

Oh dude, I'm in the same exact position as you. Last spring, I got straight A's. But this year I'm going to get a D in calculus, which is a major prerequisite. I, too, will be retaking calculus in spring. I'm applying to the same four UC's as you, except replace SD with SB.

I'm an anthropology major.

The problem really sucks, because my stats prof. decided to make everyone get a 70% + percent on the final to pass the class, and decided to make the final ridiculously harder than usual quizzes and exams.

I don't think it's fair at all because besides the 20% from the final. I have an A+ , but just because of that horrible final score, it changed to a D... it's ridiculous. :/

Wow, bizarre. My calculus grade is definitely much more faithful to my actual understanding of calculus. :)

This just really sucks. My dream was to get into CAL :/

Same here. =[

you guys know that you can appeal grades, right?

but before you go and do that, try talking to the professor.
let them know your predicament with schools and how this might ruin your chances.
show them your otherwise flawless transcripts.
take responsibility for your poor performance DESPITE knowing full well that your circumstances are unfair.
ask "if there's anything you can do, ANYTHING.. write a paper? do a social experiment, take another test, be his slave for a month... in order to get the grade changed to 1 higher than it is. (D to C, C to B, B to A)."
appeals to pity, in my experience, work the best.
eliminate that professor student wall and attempt to relate to the prof.
humble yourself before him and level.

it's definitely worth the shot.
i've gotten two grades changed from B's to A's in this fashion, and if professors tell you there's nothing they can do, they're lying. if they're unempathetic pricks, that's another story. they can change a grade (i think) up to a year after it was issued. if not a year, at least six months, but do this NOW!

you've all worked waaaaay too hard to get *****ed over by one fluke blemish.

if all else fails, you can appeal the grade at the admissions office of your school, especially with your circumstance, Dasani, but you better be well prepared to make your case.

It's not too uncommon, especially in math classes, that you need to be able to pass the final to pass the class. When you get a 20% on a final, it shows you did not actually learn the material and honestly don't really deserve to pass the class.

how the hell do u get a D in stats esp if you are a 4.0 student

^Agreed with the above. Stats is the easiest math class for transfer.

No, I did not get 20% on the final. The final is WORTH 20% , but you have to get above a 70% on the final to pass the class. I'm sure many students did not get up to 70%. I definitely think it's unfair, because all my other exams, quizzes, hw...everything was a perfect. I had 82%(bonus questions) out of 80% before the final.

Also, Pinkfloyd,

How long did the appeal process take?

I'm in the same exact dilemma, except for physics 1
Getting a D right now.

If you can get your final exam score, calculate your grade and see you would have clearly passed even given the low final exam score you would probably have grounds for some type of appeal. For many people math is not easy and for teachers to make it any more difficult for people to just pass their transferrable math is really annoying.

i'm not sure, dasani.
i've never appealed a grade.
getting my profs to change them took about 3 weeks each time.
i had to write a 7 page research paper for one, and then modify the crap out of a paper i'd already written for another. the grade changes were made by the time official grades were released.
