I have just ended my jr. year in high school, and I'm looking into Fairfield University (as well as Colgate, Holy Cross, Boston University, and Fordham).

As of now, Fairfield seems in my top two schools that I could see myself enrolled in (the other being Colgate). I have a few questions regarding Fairfield though...

How prestigious is Fairfield; I'm aware it is no Harvard or Princeton, but say if you walk into an interview will an interviewer have respect for Fairfield? In my mind i think of Fairfield as prestigious, being that it says there is a 19% admit. rate on the school website.

Social Life at Fairfield: How is it?

I plan to work in an investment firm or a hedge fund; At Fairfield I would major in economics and minor in finance; How are these departments at the school?

Honors Program at Fairfield; anything regarding

if anyone could answer any of these, it would much appreciated.

I know their business program, at least in accounting is accredited and they have small classes which is very good. I think I heard they have a good placement policy but that is something to ask the professors there.
Living in Ct, the reputation for colleges with a lot of drinking has always been (to my ears) UConn, Fairfield and Quinnipiac. Talking to students there now if possible would be helpful with that if that matters to you.

I saw on US News there acceptance rate is 64.5 and early admit is 59%. I think 19% is an error.
The other schools you mentioned have more options for doing things off campus. Fairfield only has a shuttle to the Fairfield center and Trumbull mall. Fordham has NYC and BU, Boston, Holy Cross has free shuttles to local malls,Providence and Boston every week. I think Colgate only has local transportation.

Your potential major is important and Fairfield has a good business program, but also look into what you will be doing when not studying. Good luck!

acceptance rate is up around 64% as others said. No idea about the 19%. For “prestige” Holy Cross carries much more weight (HC’s acceptance is around 35%)

Colgate and Holy Cross are on a much different level academically/acceptance rate/prestige than Fairfield. BU and Fordham are more comparable. Fairfield U has as good an alumni base for Street and Hedge Funds as any of them though. While its in a suburb, most Fairfield U kids live on the beach at some point and enjoy a hearty social life while there. Plus, Fairfield is a commuter town to NYC, its easy to hop a train and be at the heart of it all. If you like sports, Fairfield boasts a hoops team that was actually mentioned as a potential “mid major final four” candidate…think Gonzaga/Butler. They play in a nice arena 15 mins from campus that could be a center piece to your college experience.

While the prestige/program will be helpful, it’s the alumni that will get you a job. Check out Fairfield major donors…you’ll see plenty at employers that anyone would be thrilled to be a part of in the future.

Fairfield is generally seen as a back up school to schools like Colgate and Holy Cross. But if you got significant FA at Fairfield, making it cheaper than Colgate and HC it’s a great option (and no debt is always good). BU and Fordham and more Fairfield level, but in my opinion Fairfield is the least prestigious of the bunch.

Fairfield is a good regional school and is rated as such in USN&WR. Better schools to compare it to would be Scranton, Villanova, Marist, Sienna, Manhattan etc. as these are in the same category. It is a bit of a stretch to compare it to higher level academic schools like Holy Cross and Colgate (highly ranked in National Liberal Arts College category) or BU and Fordham which are highly rated National Research schools.

As to Fordham and BU (both ranked 53 in USN&WR National Reseach University categories), while a bit easier to get into than Holy Cross and Colgate (and why they are closer to Fairfield than HC and Colgate), they are still a bit harder to get in than Fairfield BUT can offer more in terms of internships, research opportunites, resources and access to a big city. A cold fact is that BU and Fordham are more prestegious than Fairfield, but you get out of an education what you put into it. As a Jesuit school, Fairfield will assure that you get a very good education.

Certainly the majority are from the northeast and are upper middle class to wealthy. And white catholics. Absolutely not a suitcase school-students stay around campus
