Fake College Website Set Up to Steal Admissions Fees | SecurityNewsDaily

The website text appears to be written by a non-native speaker. Its errors and syntax are similar to those I’ve encountered in responding to Asian student posts on CC.

I remember the US government shutting down a website which allowed users to download HD movies directly for free. The American government should actually try to shut down this website.

Just check out how a domain has been seized by the US government:

http://zml.com/index.html

Same thing should happen to this fake university’s website too.

This reminds me of an e-mail I got about an application to fill out to one of the schools I was interested in. It would supposedly give me priority decision over other applications. I checked out the website and felt like something didn’t line up.

Deleted and went on my way.

This reminds me vaguely of the movie accepted.

Nice.

The website is extensive enough that I could very well see someone falling for it, especially someone not from the US. Although, it doesn’t surprise me because it is so easy to scam with the Internet. Cybercrime is a multi-billion dollar business, more than illegal drugs.

This is so cool! I really enjoy reading about scams. However…how is this a scam? I’ve been searching for a while and as far as I can tell, there’s nowhere to apply. Could someone show me the link to apply for this school? I’d love to read the application.

I thought Cyber Crime was legal…
The College Board seems to get away with it all the time.

It does not appear there is any link on the site to actually apply or that even provides information and cost for same. Many of the links link to nothing but some of them lead to things that appear to be attempts at humor, such as a list of 13 faculty members, three of whom are named Diego Alonso Margret Geselbracht, Diego Alonso Stephen Arch, and just Diego Alonso; and the revered Women’s Committee whose members get to do such things as go to class, use the library, use the sports center, and receive mass mailings about major campus events. There is a history box that discusses how the school was named after the Redwoods who were early Oregon pioneers giving the impression the school is in Oregon but then right next to that history is the school’s address in Torrance CA. You go to alumni section and you learn such things as an alumnus includes anyone who completed 7 units but did not graduate. The best may be the Redwood Magazine which tells us about Nancy Farmer, an alumnus from 1963, who writes childrens books about drug lords.

My sense is that Reed is just speculating about this being used as a scam to get money and it might just be somebody’s Reed joke. You will notice in the artical that the reporter does nothing to confirm Reed’s claim that the site may be a scam to get money from those in Asia.

I don’t see any link to apply either

I find the fact that it has a fax number in lieu of a phone number to be a giveaway.

Or that a school supposedly in Portland, OR, has only one mailing address–in Torrance, CA.

And the picture here has a watermark on it from another site:
[University Of Redwood](uredwood.com)

LOL and the area code for the fax number is for the Bay Area/Palo Alto, CA and cities surrounding it.

I think you all are jealoused of our University because it’s being so good place for creative, critical and positive thinkers. Do you know, our graduate is rate the highest in All of Oregon metropolitan region? And our football, cricket and other popular sports clubs is winning every Ncaa best award for champions all of last year, 2010! It is by far the US most respectable college, and our average (mean) graduates last five years is making over US£100.000,00 for sure.

So please have more respectful attitude, as it deserves!

Sincerely,
Bob Jonhathan DAVISS, PH,d
the Uredwood’s official admissions representive

And if you ask, yes! We are having three different professors all name Diego Alonso, all different people and not just some fake typing for deceptive purposes. There is no such!

[University Of Redwood](uredwood.com)

^^haha

I think it’s funny that they even have a link to Reed at one point…

Too funny check out all of the grammatical errors in post #17. They actually try to defend themselves when the prior news media article says they were previously shutdown as a fake website…LOL.

I wanna apply to Redwood.forget the Ivies.
