Fake ID

At UVA, I believe it is an honor code violation and the user is subject to immediate dismissal from school.

Fake IDs are very very common on campus, particularly at schools in or near a city.

I know of a kid who along with 5 other kids sent $600 to China for fake ids- they each got 2 for their $100 (not sure why 2…). The kids were willing to send the cash & even more surprisingly they got something in return! No idea where the got the address to send it etc… probably craigslist! I heard the ids looked pretty good- no idea what they were but just heard on the news this month about a crack down on fake NY & NJ license operation in China - could it be the same manufacturer?

I had a lot of questions when I heard about this but the adult didn’t have the answers and didn’t want to know …

Because the first state was spelled New Yolk.

UVa’s Honor Code prohibits lying, cheating and stealing within Charlottesville and the surrounding County. If convicted by a board of students, there is only one penalty - explusion. However, the offense has to be serious enough that a fellow student would charge you and fellow students would convict you. I’d be a little surprised if a false ID to buy beer by itself has been enough to warrant that punishment.

Maybe it depends on the bouncer. I read a story a while back about a kid who was going bar hopping with a friend, but the only ID he had was an expired driver’s license (which showed he was under 21). He gave the ID to the bouncer, who said that he wasn’t 21 and couldn’t go in. The kid explained that the license was three years old, and the bouncer said “Oh, OK”.

In our state, BOTH the person who is under-age and has someone else’s ID & the person who loaned the ID to the under-age person can be charged. I forget what the penalty was but I believe jail time and a fine were options for BOTH people involved. It ended up with an attorney representing the pair who were both very sorry & embarrassed about it.

To me, the risks far outweigh the benefits. I don’t BELIEVE my kids used fake IDs & now they’re >21. I believe D had friends who got in when under-age but never inquired as D wasn’t going to be present & she was >21 anyway.

I don’t want to downplay the potential for getting into trouble over this, but I have to say that every time this comes up, I do a search for some evidence of anybody, anywhere, getting into serious trouble for using a fake ID to get into a bar. So far, I haven’t found it. Perhaps it’s because, as MomOfWildChild suggests, the trouble is that you have to pay a large amount of money to get out of the trouble and it doesn’t get reported. And:

I agree with the first sentence, but I’m not sure I do agree with the second. If you want to get into the club where a band you want to hear is playing, you need ID. Is it really the case that you don’t belong there because alcohol is served? I think we’ve created a system that sets up strong incentives for kids to circumvent the law–and we’re just putting money into the pockets of “the Chinese guy.”

This seems to vary a lot by region/type of school. My kids (23, 20, 18. . .) haven’t seen them or known anyone who had one, or even heard people talking about them. Our impression is that fake ID’s are something only really “wild” kids or “heavy drinkers” would have.

On some college campuses, kids don’t need them because alcohol is readily available at parties, etc. At other campusus, a large amount of socializing is done at local clubs and bars, and there kids tend to have them.

Way back when I was in college, I routinely used an older suitemate’s ID to get into the college bars. We didn’t look alike, other than both being females with medium skin and light brown hair. No bouncer ever refused me entry.

Fast forward a few years: I’ve graduated college and turned 21 years old. Using my own, legal, ID (in-state driver’s license) – I’m denied entry to a bar. The bouncer told me to “get the h*ll out of here”, and wouldn’t believe that I was 21 years old. I was very angry at the time, but now I think its sort of funny that I used fake ID for three years and never had trouble, yet couldn’t get in when I was legal.

D1 is >21. I don’t think D2 has a fake ID, but I wouldn’t put it past her. The D’s are sometimes mistaken as twins, so it would be easy for D2 to use something of D1’s…

I know D2 drinks socially (not that I condone it), but I think it is usually at parties. D2 doesn’t give me details – I sleep better when I don’t know the details!!

Each state is different as are many municipalities as are many officers as well as teh individual bars. If you use someone else’s legitimate license you would be impersonating that person and that is a crime. If you make a license or copy some other form of official ID you are committing a forgery which in NY is a felony. You could be arrested for it, but in general it is not enforced and the license is more than likely confiscated and that is that. The kids attitude could control the whole encounter from “have a good night” to “call mommy, you’re going to jail”.
Or the cop could take the kid out back, taser them and then beat them to within an inch of their lives as Machiavelli says would happen.

Don’t buy fake IDs for other people. That really can get you into trouble:

OK, here’s one about kids arrested just for ordering fake IDs:

Even if they are never convicted, this article will–possibly forever–come up in Google searches of their names.

So, yes, in some places people are being arrested for just having or using fake IDs. Whether they are being convicted, I don’t know (probably not), but as I noted above, these articles will be Googlable.

Funny story about my fake ID while in college:

I had a “real” fake ID of somebody that I resembled. In order to have a “back up” ID with the same identity as my alter-ego, I altered my student ID. It was relatively easy, as the name section on the student ID’s were just white with printed letters. I printed out another label and taped it to my student ID.

One night, at an on-campus bar, the bouncer was giving me a hard time with the ID. This was a school run bar, so you needed the student ID to get in. He called the cop over because of his “issues” with my ID’s.

The cop said “the signatures don’t match on these two ID’s, which one is you?”.

I stated the driver’s license was really me, I was just using the student ID to get into this bar tonight, I actually go to XXX college (on the other side of town).

The cop proceeded to hand me back my fake ID and kept my real student ID. Funny stuff. I went on to successfully use the fake ID until I turned 21. Good times at college!!!

“This seems to vary a lot by region/type of school. My kids (23, 20, 18. . .) haven’t seen them or known anyone who had one, or even heard people talking about them. Our impression is that fake ID’s are something only really “wild” kids or “heavy drinkers” would have.”

atomom, your kids are either extremely sheltered or they are not telling you the truth. You’d be hard pressed to find a kid in college that hasn’t met or seen somebody with a fake ID. That’s almost as naive as saying kids under 21 don’t drink in college.

If you can get all the booze you want right down the street at a frat house or dorm party, why spend the money for a fake ID? I don’t think many kids at my son’s school have them.

^Alcohol was readily available at frat parties, however, it was in the form of lukewarm ditchwater known as Keystone Light. Cornell limits the proof of alcohol allowed to be served at frats, so there’s no liquor or “good” beer available at open parties. Keystone Light is like 2 proof so a gallon of it won’t really dent your sobriety.

Tons of kids had fake IDs. The liquor stores and some of the bars carded fairly hard however, which limited the usefulness of such an expensive and risky investment. I personally saw no point in going to the bars unless my friends could all get in too, so being the only one with a fake didn’t appeal to me.

I have to say that even though younger D turned 21 three months ago, I have never seen her drink even when we have gone out to dinner & I have offered.
I’m not saying she has never had a drink before, but perhaps it loses the appeal when you turn 21!

The funniest story regarding fake ID’s that I have ever heard was a friend of D"s who was going out to dinner with his family.
His younger sister ordered a drink with her fake ID.
Cause perhaps her family wouldn’t know how old she really was?
