"ive earned everything ive worked for, yet I still respect other people enough to let them make their own decisions and live with their own consequences as long as it does not involve me."

Where on earth of the consequences? You can't just assume that it will catch up with them. There's absolutely no way to know that, and last I saw, there wasn't a huge study done on cheaters and how many had karma catch up with them.

Why do you think people should go around acting like they are a hybrid of Jesus Christ and Chuck Norris and take karma into their own hands? It's ridiculous.

Just wondering, do any of the people who wanted the OP to snitch despite having little evidence of wrongdoing have a Facebook? Do you guys print off pictures of kids drinking on the weekends? If not, why don't you? Sure the kid could get kicked out of school, but you could prevent them from hurting someone while they're drunk or becoming an alcoholic later on in life.

Flawed analogy. Drinking does not imply being alcoholic. There are responsible ways to drink. Cheating however, is a sign of an antisocial personality flaw. It is debatable whether a drinking age is just or even morally sound. Immanuel Kant would definitely object.

However, cheating ALWAYS entails an immoral and flawed personality.

"Why do you think people should go around acting like they are a hybrid of Jesus Christ and Chuck Norris and take karma into their own hands? It's ridiculous."

Because Yale was wronged. I don't value the cheater's right to remain uncaught at all in this situation. Yale's right to know, as well as the teacher's, are far more important than whatever right the cheater has to remain a fraud.

If you were in the OP's shoes, you would pump your fist, and shout, "Yesssss!" Because you hate that SOB, and have been waiting for him to get his ass handed to him.

<snicker> Not true for me, but funny in a Bill Murray "Caddyshack" sort of way. I'm old-fashioned, though, and I truly would feel badly for Yalecheater if he really did cheat and wouldn't gloat about it.</snicker>

"Why do you think people should go around acting like they are a hybrid of Jesus Christ and Chuck Norris and take karma into their own hands? It's ridiculous."

I agree with Baelor on this.

I'd also like to point out that just because the OP decided to inform those involved in the situation that cheating may have taken place, that does not mean that he's "taking karma into his own hands." To say that would mean that the OP had the power to give this kid some sort of punishment, which he does not. You're assigning too much power to the OP, when in reality he's just handing the situation over those involved.

zzzboy, I'd like to hear an actual counterargument to galoisien's claim. I'm sure there is one, but you're not representing it very well, obviously.

That is completely ridiculous it is noone else's business what other people do and you most certainly can not force someone to do the right thing. Who cares if the person cheated? Is it wrong? Yes. But it is not in our capacity to cause judgement and punishment to be done. Remember CHRIST said judge lest not ye be judged. Unless you have never done anything wrong, then you should not report that person. Let GOD handle that.

"i dont have to present a counterargument. he made a claim against every cheater in the history of man. he's the one who has to prove it"

But he said that the act itself is antisocial. That's all he needs to prove. He doesn't need to prove it for every person.

Dbate: Hahahahaha. I believe in God, but eternal punishment is way different from worldly matters. Don't judge him as a person, but judging his actions as a detriment to a functional society or whatever is fine. Jesus doesn't have a problem with jailing murderers, if I could take a guess.

There is a pretty fundamental misunderstanding of "karma" going on in this thread. Karma is consequence for deed and thought. It's pretty clear that one consequence for the forger's deed is that someone could (properly) share that information with the people whose names were ascribed in the forgery, i.e., the teachers. That's karma every bit as much (more, in fact) as some watery notion that the good/evil balance in the universe somehow finds level with no outside human engagement.

As for "judgement" ... another misunderstanding of the concept. I can report something unlawful, immoral, or unfair and not "judge" the perpetrator in a Biblical sense.

"i dont have to present a counterargument. he made a claim against every cheater in the history of man. he's the one who has to prove it."

Strictly speaking, he doesn't have to prove anything if no argument against his claim is presented. If it's that easy to destroy his entire argument, it shouldn't be that hard for you to do it.

The following isn't addressed only at you, just fyi.

Seriously, I know that everyone on CC only argues to defend their own egos and there's no hope in getting anyone to consider an opinion that doesn't fit with their own, but would it kill you all to flesh out your arguments? There's so much arrogant "whatever"-ing going on that there's really no point in having this discussion, because even those of us who are just curious as to the full scope of a certain opinion are never going to get that. I'm not assuming that any of you are wrong, but it's hard to assess the validity of your arguments if you won't even support them. It's ridiculous. Don't start arguing if you're just going to take it for granted that your opinion is correct and the light of God will shine down and fix all of the non-believers.

"That is completely ridiculous it is noone else's business what other people do and you most certainly can not force someone to do the right thing. Who cares if the person cheated? Is it wrong?
If the OP reported the cheating (assuming cheating took place), he's not forcing the cheater to do anything or judging him. He's turning the cheater over to the people who have every right to determine punishment, since the offense was committed against them and an application forms a contract.

Also, I'm not sure that there is a God, and if there is I doubt he interferes in every little thing. So I have some trouble just leaving it up to God.

its not leaving it up to God. yea sure, karma brings along the teachings of hinduism and buddhism, but we're not really using it in a religious context.

by karma, we just mean that his misdeeds will eventually catch up with him. eventually, if he continues cheating, the school he goes to or the company he works for will probably find out, and then he will be dealt with.

but there are plenty of cheaters who avoid getting caught, right? well this guy wont learn a damn thing if he's reported, and thats for sure.

he TOLD people that he forged recs. if he really did it and gets caught for it, hes not gonna be like "damn i shouldnt have forged them," hes gonna say "damn i shouldnt have told anybody."

^These are all very good points. I wasn't really considering that he wouldn't learn from this mistake, but you're right, there's a good chance he won't.

I still might report him just to make sure that his cheating catches up to him, though. :P In that case, you all have every right say that I'm trying to be some kind of karma enforcer, though I'd probably do it anyway.

I actually read an article the other day that talked about how like 30% of American kids these days are missing some gene that makes the neural receptors that allow them to learn from their mistakes. Or something along those lines, I'm not well-versed in biology.
