so what happened to the yale guy?

29 pages of replies... sucks if OP didn't do anything.

Its sort of boring not knowing what happened to YC.

collegebound2009, any updates?

Ah, galoisien, you're a moral relativist too. Nice to know.
No, because academic cheating and cheating in a game are radically different as far as impact to others go. I mean, wallhacks are of a different nature than false qualifications. It's like evaluating the morality of murder, and all of a sudden you go, 'BUT WAIT WHAT ABOUT MURDERING ANIMALS FOR FOOD LOLZ'.
So my argument is invalid because I actually know what the word "justifiable" means and you don't? Please.
Note that the suffix -able doesn't even specify the agent. Debating morality should never get into semantics.

You're from singapore right, don't they whip you for chewing gum over there lol?
Umm, please get YOUR SOURCES CORRECT. You may also want to check the Singapore Statutes and find something to JUSTIFY your FALSE RUMOUR-PROPAGATING SLANDER. kthxbai

(Also, if you haven't been ignorant, Singapore has signed an FTA with the US since 2004 which included a clause about gum. But obviously you have been ignorant by subscribing to bigoted urban legends about countries. Also, the piccolo is a very feminine instrument. )

Since CC doesn't allow profanity of any kind --including that indicated by asterisks-- I've removed several posts for that reason. I also have removed some off topic posts.

A reminder that it's fine to disagree with others' opinions, but confine your debate to others' opinions: Don't disparage their characters, which is a TOS violation.

College2009's last post indicated that he had communicated what he knew to the teachers and left it in their hands. He may not know if there will be any follow-up. This gets into student confidentiality issues and I could easily see the teachers/GC refusing to let college2009 know what has happened.

Then cheating isn't always morally unjustified nor is it always morally justified as is everything.

Everyone knows that there was a chewing gum ban in Singapore up until a few years ago. Anyone who has lived in a country where they're whipped just for chewing gum is probably going to have a "unique" view about what's morality justified. Also, don't they whip people for other petty crimes like egging cars? (Ask American Michael Fay.)

No wonder why you want to see this kid punished so severely for supposedly forging his recommendations. What would happen to him in Singapore? Would he have his admission rescinded and receive six strokes with a rattan cane on his bare butt in public so you can publicly humiliate him? (In case anyone is wondering, Michael Fay was found guilty of vandalism and in addition to serving time he was caned.)

Ad hominem.

Also, see -- here you are MAKING BIGOTED REMARKS AGAIN.

You do not get caned for chewing gum. You get caned for serious offences like say, murder, aggravated assault, rampant vandalism, etc.

You also do not get punished for chewing gum, before or after the FTA. You got punished for SELLING it. We were at perfect liberty to chew gum if we got our hands on it.

Please get your facts correct.

Wrong.

Simply because two acts have the name of "cheating" doesn't mean those two acts are equivalent.

Or did you fail logic? Do you know what the fallacy of equivocation is??

Not ATTEMPT to demonstrate or prove

Yeah, it's disappointing to check each day and see no resolution -- especially among those of you who are just bickering on this thread! CountingDown, is right about confidentiality. I suppose we'll never know ...

I suggest that you tone down your obvious condescension of other countries, because otherwise you bring a bad name to your own. The way you make sweeping generalizations like

shows an utter inability or intellectual laziness to go beyond them, and, if you want to play it like that, probably doesn't reflect well on your country's education system either. How about some respect for another country's sovereignty and laws, plus a more open mind and less disdain for others, especially for someone whose country is obviously well past its prime?

Rescinded = punishment? He's not entitled to a place at Yale. His admission and place are contingent upon the truthfulness of his application. If he did forge his recommendations, then his Yale place is not his. Plain and simple. Taking away something that wasn't his to begin with is not "punishment". Next thing you know, it's gonna be "too harsh" to ask a shoplifter to return the items that he had stolen.
