Fakes

how necessary is it that a freshman girl have a fake id? should i wait til i get to philly to get one, or get one in my home city?

Not that I'm saying anything, but a bird in hand is better than two in the bush.

Be careful with it. A Penn student I know was arrested in NJ for possession of a fake ID, had a $5K legal bill and is serving an onorous probation before the thing will be off his record. It's a felony and since 9/11 is taken seriously in some places (not all).

Get one. Ignore the post above me...not that it's bad advice, because it's wise to consider it, but listen to the students, not the parent. I am a girl and just finished my freshman year, and I used it 2-3 times a week. Granted, I'm on the...more social side. But if you plan to have a decent social life you need one. You'll use it for bars, buying alcohol, and the occasional registered party. Get a good one in your city if you can, but if not you can get a $40 one here. It won't work many places outside of West Philly, but it'll be fine as a girl freshman year.

^I thought the guys who were selling those got busted and/or stopped selling them. All you really need is a $40 fake. A place that accepts fakes will take some of the crappiest fakes, but generally you can get into most places with a $40 fake. Some of the places that are really strict about fakes won't accept some that look almost real. I didn't have a fake, but really wanted one for my freshman year. I would have probably used it once a week or once every other week. It gets expensive going downtown as a guy because you have to buy your own drinks, and any drinks you might have to buy for a possible date.

adf8- I happen to be the parent of a student, so you might be wise to listen to me. Don't use that ID in New Jersey or you, too, can have your very own probation for a criminal offense and a huge legal bill. Also, do not use it at Penn State, if you should happen to go visit someone.
I'm not an idiot. I had a fake ID of my own (back when we typed them up on stolen license stock). Everyone in my kid's Penn dorm displayed their IDs with pride on move-in day freshman year. I had no idea the penalties were so stiff if you get caught in the wrong town. They are fine around Penn- just don't venture far with it.

Ehh, some of them might have gotten busted, but when there's a demand a supply usually develops. I'm sure someone is still making the $40 licenses. Also, side note for the collegegal- there are bars around campus, you don't just have to go downtown to use it.
MomofWildChild is right- if you have a bad fake, don't try to use it unless you're semi-familiar with the place/how strict it is. But I'm pretty sure bouncers in Pennsylvania don't get paid for turning people in because they rarely take IDs.

Disregard MoWC at your own peril. I, for one, would heed her advice -- consider her moniker: clearly she knows whereof she speaks!
