Heh.....getting a 12 on the SAT essay mainly requires a provincial writing style, that is you must be able to do the 5-paragraph essay with examples. You couldn't actually write a good, non-formulaic essay and receive a top score.

I lied on my SAT essay.

The prompt was "is success luck or hard work" and I talked about being an orphan

What is it right now -- there are three threads on lying about ECs, too.

If you can write a good application essay with bogus facts, you can write a good one that is real. And you won't have to worry about that pesky conscience thing or the fear of being found out. (Do you really want to feel like a fraud in a few years if your essay is successful?)

I think the SAT essay is different. You aren't certifying that you are telling the truth the way you are with a college app. The SAT people just want to see how well you write. I remember one test prep program that said, go ahead, makes up facts, etc. -- it is your writing organization, style, vocabulary and the like that are being graded.

I advocate lying

on the SAT essay only lol. i dind't lie on my SAT essay b/c it was mainly on LIcoln and Edison(how could i lie) but SAT essays u can just make stuff up as long as it supports ur thesis

We could make up facts about how Vanilla Ice was President of the United States?

i can't believe we have to compete with liars.

unless you're a really good fiction writer, it is pretty hard to lie convincingly.

On a related topic, I wonder how many college applicants get other people to write their essays for them. I bet there's quite a lot because colleges won't know if someone actually wrote their own; there's no way of telling. People cheat on school papers; there's definitely people that cheat on college application essays. That's a bad deal for the honest ones who put forth their hard work and sweat into their own essays. It's wrong anyway, even to not compare the cheaters to those who did their work.

It's disgusting how many people pay others to write their college app essays. There's just no excuse.

Faking essays is not a good idea.

how can you let someone write you a college app essay? that person doesn't know your experience or personality. you would have to spend hours talking to him/her.

Some people get their friends to do it for them. Plus, speaking about lying, they don't necessarily have to write about the applicant and can instead write about themselves and incorporate their own experiences and ideas. Colleges don't know the applicant so anything goes.

Not necessarily; the student's personality will also be revealed by ECs and letters of recommendation. If the essays and recommendations describe different people they will not be effective.

Also, at least for grad school our entrance exam essay (GRE test, equivalent of the SAT) is included with the scores sent to schools, so they can read a piece of writing that is certifiably yours and compare it against the essays. Doesn't the SAT do this as well?

how far is it okay to let any one else edit your essay???
I kinda got it reviewed (and edited) from a couple of frens, a teacher and a couple of relatives........err...got mixed comments!!!

But one thing I do advise to everyone is that you should have at least one person read your essay.....and take his comments seriously!

yeah my algebra 2 teacher said to come back to her because she loves to read college essays

no, but tons of people do it...
