Fall 07: Acceptances/Rejections

please follow this template w/ all ur schools...

school - field - program - status:

ucla - comp sci - master's - accepted

(i was really surprised to hear from any school this early. weird!)

isnt this a bit too early?

definitely. but someone else (i think addwit) already mentioned getting accepted, too. so, i figured we'd need this eventually... might as well start the thread ;-)

Congrats, ct. Is anyone else as excited as I am about the fact that February begins next week??

Berkeley - Materials Sci. & Eng. - PhD - Accepted
Caltech - Materials Science - PhD - No decision, but they're flying me out.

Congrats on ur acceptances. you guys seem to like cali huh :). I heard back from all of my schools but Harvard.

Addwit: I'm pretty excited about Feb, but dreaded about 3 intercontinental flights in 4 weeks. a little price to pay to go to schools on the opposite coast...

Cornell-- Chemical Biology-- PhD--Accepted
Johns Hopkins-- Biophysics--PhD--Interview
MIT-- Biology--PhD--Interview
Michigan--Chemical Biology--PhD--Interview
Rockefeller-- no idea--PhD--Rejected
Scripps -- Chemical Biology-- PhD -- Interview

yeah, the repeated east coast - west coast return trips will be quite stressful, especially during school year. i may decide not to go all the way to upenn, my only east coast school.

Baylor College of Medicine- Molecular and Cellulr Bio- PhD- interview
MIT- Biology- PhD- rejected
UPenn- Cellular and Molecular Biology- PhD- interview
Univ of Wisconsin- Madison -- Cancer Biology- PhD- interview
Stanford- Cancer Biology- PhD- interview
Harvard- BBS Pathology- PhD- waiting (most likely rejected)
UCSD- Molecular Pathology- PhD- waiting (good chance)
Michigan- PIBS- PhD- waiting (good chance)

i'm still quite surprised at the number of interview offers considering i'm an international student.

my top choices so far are stanford and ucsd. cali for life!

this is like reading a who's-who of top graduate programs.

can people also include at the bottom, a very brief profile, so we can get a sense of applicant strength?

e.g. undergrad, GPA, GRE, experiences? specifics are nice, otherwise something like:

top-25 Public, ~3.6, >750Q >650V 5.5 A, 2 peer-reviewed pubs.

alright, amendment to my post:

UC Berkeley honor graduate, 3.6 overall, 3.8 major. 800Q 640V 5.5W 760 subject, 2 and half year research experience at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 2 PNAS paper, 2nd and 3rd authors. 1 MCB Honor poster session, 1 ACS meeting presentation, biology fellow

Sure, here's a brief profile:

3.8+ overall GPA, 4.0 major; Lots of research experience (at two famous schools as well as my own); 780Q 630V 4.5W; one 2nd author paper in progress.

it's most likely because the ones who are the most likely to get into the top programs are ones who are represented more heavily in these kinds of forums. i feel like i'm just stating the obvious, and that you already know this.

i don't really tell this to anyone in real life except to my family members, but i might as well "boast" here too to help those who are going to prepare for these programs in the near future =P

3.91 overall, 4.0 major, i'm most likely going to do honors research this semester, 800M/630V/5.0, 92% subject, 1 summer at UCSF, 1 school year at lawrence berkeley lab before graduation, will be coauthor very soon.

eastcoast, i'm just glad i'm not competing against you, being a fellow bear and all lol.

Seems like Biology responds really early.

So far I only know:

Georgia Tech - Mech. Eng. - Master's - Accepted

GATech is actually paying for me to visit them even though I'm only Master's there, which I think is pretty cool.

My stats should offer some hope,
Berkeley - 3.59 overall, 3.75 major, 1.5 years research - but doing work fairly unrelated to my actual major, coauthor on 2 conference papers, my recommenders are well known but didn't like invent a field, and I know they didn't write I was a once in a lifetime student or anything like that, 800/690/5.5 GREs

ccmad, congrats on your new paper. ditto to the competition. i just want to get out of bay area/cali. being in berkeley all these years make me want to go somewhere more "conservative" ;) and let me know how the stanford "interview" goes. btw u should do the honor research. i wish i could give a talk at the honor symposium, but im fall graduate...

merper, yeah i think bio/chem respond much earlier. i received my first admission a week after the new years day. but our interviews are pretty early too. my first one is in 2 weeks!

Congrats to everyone with their acceptances!

Do yourself a favor though: soak up the undergraditude and non-grad student life! Grad school will be busy busy busy!

Oh man, I see it now-- eastcoastbound goes from Berkeley, CA to... drumroll Cambridge, MA.

This means that his conservative living rating moves from a -9 to a -8.5.

SWEET. :D

haha, maybe... but i also may end up in ithaca and NYC or baltimore, who knows. but man, berkeley has to be -9.5. i thought i was a liberal until i got there.

Lol, eastcoastbound, if you think NYC or Ithaca is more conservative, I hate to break it to you, but NYC well... is the city with "Republican" politicians who are pro-choice and pro-gay marriage. Ithaca has like organic farms and co-ops all around.

Baltimore, you might have a chance of finding conservativeness. :)

I'll chime in for my son.

Bio: 3.89 overall GPA, 3.91 major (Chemistry) Top Chem student, 12th overall at Villanova, 2 summers of research, one publication. Scores: 800Q (94%) 670V (92%), W 4.5, Congrats on those nice writing scores, btw. Subject 670??? We were happy with that score because 1/3 of the subject matter he hadn't even finished taking yet.

His are all Biochem or a Chem/Bio interface
Yale:accepted (no interview)
MIT: rejected
Pitt: accepted (no interview)
Vanderbilt: interview
Johns Hopkins: they said they needed a transcript -we had sent one, so waiting
Harvard: Waiting
Stanford:Waiting

Unless Harvard comes through, I can't see him dumping Yale for anything else, so, for now, it looks like he'll be going there.

Eastcoast: one of the reasons my son decided to NOT apply to Berkeley was because it is too liberal for him. He said it would drive him nuts.;)

You guys are nuts, with all the publications and stuff. LOL. It makes me feel like I am nothing in comparison to you guys.

so far i only heard from UIUC, which I got in. hopefully i will hear from other schools in the next couple of weeks

Berkeley, 3.96 Overall, 4.0 major. V:700, Q: 800. AW: 5.0. 3 years of research (mostly in a field unrelated to the field I intend to go into in grad. school. )

I'll follow NJBeagle's lead, as a parent, because I'm lucky that he's told me what's going on. LOL

FL resident, Microbiology Major 3.8, 3.7 overall. V: 500 Q: 770 AW: 5.5 (I say WOW on all the verbal scores). Six months research in a secuity lab working with infectious disease.

Emory - Interview
UFlorida - Interview
Baylor College of Med - Interview
U Kentucky Med - Interview
UT Dallas Southerwestern - Waiting
UT Houston HSC - Waiting
U Miami Med - Waiting

Big reaches:
Stanford - Waiting
Johns Hopkins - Waiting

He didn't "reach" at all with undergrad, so he decided to do so this time, so he's not really expecting anything there, so he is happy so far.

wow it seems that biology and chem depts..etc. make their decision really early.

I'm applying to CS phd. Most of them tell me that they'll send out the decision in March.
The only school I've heard from is University of Florida. They said they have reviewed my application and wants to pay for lodging/plane ticket so that I can visit their campus/facilities during their prospective students weekend. They did say however that doesn't mean that I'm accepted.
