pydbl: im too lazy to walk to telegraph, domino or west coast delivery :) i like to have a friday night dinner at a nice family restaurant, so thats one of my top graduate school criteria, along with flatness of the terrain. :)

I don't have much to share, but it may be useful to someone:

Florida State University, EE major, 4.0 overall, Q:780, V:580, W:4.5, 1 summer REU (at UMN), 2 semesters of part-time research

I have a question.

Do I really have to go to the paid visits? It's not really an interview. I got an email from Univ of Florida and they want to fly me out there. The problem is I currently have a full-time job and I won't be able to take time off since I already used up my vacation time. If I didn't go, will that affect my application decision?

if you are accepted, they will tell you right away and send you a big package and a little paper to sign. if not, you have to assume it is interview. it can be called recruitment visiting, perspective students visiting, interviews, visitation weekend, open house, etc. as long as they didnt say "congratulations on your admission to our graduate program", you have to go there.

eastcoastbound:

are you sure about that? I'm pretty sure CS phd applications don't have interviews?

In the email they just said it's a prospective student weekend, which gives you a chance to see the facility and meet with professors. They asked if I'm interested in attending this event.

So I'm just worried if by not attending this event, whether it will affect my application decision.

well, in this case, i am not sure. you should email them. the school i was accepted told me that they encourage me to attend their open house. others invited me. if there is no interview, not attending this event probably wont affect your application at all because you are already accepted.

EE departments sure are slow...

hey phpguru, where do/did you go to school? where was your summer research program?

Yep these EE departments are slow.

I go to UCSB for my undergrad and my summer program was also here.

Do EE programs also fly people out? Should I have heard by now if they will?

You never know. I'm sure it takes some time to let everyone know. I've been telling myself not to read into anything until you hear back from the school. You aren't rejected until they tell you that you are, so no reason to stress yourself out with theoretical situations.

You're right. Admissions season just gets me too antsy to be patient.
