Fall 07: Acceptances/Rejections

momof3sons,

If his profs pointed him in the direction of OSU, I'm sure it's good for him-- professors are usually the best bet for finding out what programs will fit you. There's a lot of collusion between programs anyway...

Man, grad school... what a weird thing.

My daughter has received an invitation from UNC-ChapelHill Journalism & Communication School to interview for admissions & fellowship. The fellowship is for full tuition, fees & $11,000 stipend. They are flying her to UNC from Shanghai. Does this mean they are seriously considering admitting her? She is very excited! Does anyone know how UNC Journalism compares to other journalism programs? Berkeley is one of her top choices. She applied to their combined Journalism/Asian Studies program, which is very competitive. They invite applicants they are considering to interview but she has not heard from them yet. Has anyone heard from Berkeley's J-school?

My D is very stressed out about this grad school process. More so than undergrad!

Hi amalee,
If you are comfortable replying on the forum, may I ask what type of funding OSU offered? I don't mean actual $$$, just what type of work/research arrangements. Congrats, by the way!

Holy !@&^!
I just got an express delivery:

Cornell - Mech E. - MS/PHD - Accepted!

This just totally made my day. I wasn't expecting them to admit me at all.

Congratulations, merper.

momof3sons,
I was told that I was nominated for a university wide fellowship, in the amount of $X for 2 years. Afterward, I would have 3 years of Graduate Associate funding with 20/hours per week workload (teaching or research). If I don't get the university fellowship (university wide, awarded in March), I will receive 5 years of GA funding (currently about $500 less than the fellowship, but they expect it to increase).
So, basically, if I get the fellowship, I will get 2 years without having to work for the department, but the money will be the same regardless.
Hope that helps.
Did your son get something different?

I'm so happy! Years of hard work is paying off!

amalee,
Sounds like the same thing as he was offered. I'm guessing you were both strong applicants since this seems like fairly early notification. Are you thinking about going there for their visiting weekend?

momof3,
I will be at the visiting weekend, unless it is the same as other schools that are higher on my list. If OSU is the only school I am accepted to, I will be very happy. It is a good match, but I do have a couple of reaches that I would be ecstatic to attend.

Did anyone hear from MIT MSE yet?

Apparently an international student (Korean) received an offer already?

Is the first round of offers out already?

Yeah, I saw that on gradcafe. MIT's first visitation weekend is less than 3 weeks away (if I remember correctly), so they must be sending out first-round decisions real soon if they haven't done so already. I haven't heard of anyone else getting an offer though.

It looks like the first round of decisions have been sent out already. =*( I didn't hear anything from them, but apparently this is the email they sent out:

I am very pleased to let you know that you have been admitted to the MIT Department of Materials Science and Engineering (DMSE) for PhD-track graduate studies in Fall 2007.You will be receiving a complete admissions package by express mail within the week, which will contain the formal offer and department information.

March 1-3 and March 15-17, 2007. On each of these weekends, you and other newly admitted students can visit MIT to meet with faculty and students and learn firsthand about our research and education opportunities.MIT will at least partially reimburse your travel costs and will cover lodging over the visitation weekend of your choice -- details are provided in your forthcoming admissions package. We hope you can attend one of these weekends, and I look forward to meeting you then.**

You can email Ms. Stephanie Bright (sbright@mit.edu) in our Graduate Student Services Office to inform her of your intent to visit. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Oh well... I'd rather be on the west coast anyways.

Congrats Addwit!

Purdue-Chemistry-Accepted.
Stanford-Chemistry-Accepted (and I am definitely glad to be getting out of the Midwest)
Harvard-Chemistry-Waiting

Hey. I just wanted to let those who are curious know that UCLA called me today and I got in! They want to fly me out in March and said that fellowship awards will be distributed in about two weeks.

Good luck to everyone!
