Which school have you decided to attend? What were your options? How did you make your decision?

I am 95% sure about which school I'll be attending, but I don't want to say anything until it's final.

Such a tease.

school = ucla - cs master's program.
options = none... rejected from all 8 other schools so far
reasoning: no other options, and i like the school a lot

Haha...nice!!! I like how you made my q its own thread!

I am in the same boat. I know where I want to go but won't say anything untill it's all finalized (that is, they give me money...lol...still waiting on that update though)....

I was accpeted to all six schools I applied to though and I have some great choices.

school = stanford - cs masters program
options = none... only applied to stanford
reasoning: well I applied because I want to go there.

school = University of Illinois at Chicago, PhD in Communication

options = none. I applied to 4 programs and was only admited to the one. Received full funding (tuition/fee waiver and stipend).

reasoning = UIC was a bit of an unconventional option, but I applied because, of all the comm programs I researched, its faculty actually had the strongest commitment to my particular sub-field of communication (media-related topics on the rhetoric and politics of education in contemporary China). I'm very happy with the outcome and can't wait to get started in the fall!

Materials Science

School: MIT

Options: Stanford, MIT, Berkeley, Caltech, Northwestern, Brown, UCSB

Reasoning: Great match of research interests, I liked the general atmosphere, and Boston is a great city.

I need to represent for the 3 social science applicants on this board...

Social Work / Welfare / Administration

School: University of Michigan, Social Work Fellowship

Options: U of Chicago; waitlisted at UW Seattle

Reasoning: Tough choice between Michigan and Chicago. Both programs offered strong scholarships, but the fellowship opportunity at UMich was the deal maker. As far as liveable cities, the edge definitely went to Ann Arbor. Hyde Park didnt do it for me.

I am deciding between Stanford, Johns Hopkins, and University of Michigan for an MS in environmental engineering. I would like to get a PhD and eventually go into environmental policy. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Well, I'm deciding between Pitt, Indiana, and Penn State for a MA in Applied Linguistics and TESOL. I want to go to Indiana....but I am awaiting info about financial aid. Pitt already offered me $$$$ but I would like to experience a new environment...plus, Indiana is awesomeness.....I'll know by April 15th.

Alright, I'm certain enough now to post.

Materials Science PhD

School: Stanford

Options: Berkeley, Caltech, Columbia (applied physics), Harvard (applied physics), Michigan, Princeton (mech/aero eng). On wait-list at Northwestern.

Reasoning: Great location, several professors I like, amazing weather, and best funding package.

Aww...it sure feels good to be done with the whole process.

Addwit, just out of curiosity, did you receive a three year fellowship or one year fellowship from Stanford?

Just a one year fellowship.

Mechanical Engineering

School: Stanford

Options: Caltech, Princeton, Cornell, Brown, Michigan, Northwestern

Reasoning: It was one of 2 schools (Michigan being the other) that absolutely matched my research interests. Princeton was my next choice but I still felt that I was slightly compromising what I really wanted to do if I were to go there. Stanford gave me great financial support and I am already assigned to an advisor so I won't have to go through their ridiculous PhD admissions process after the first year. Not to mention Cali is pretty nice.

Cell and Molecular Biology/Cell Growth and Cancer PhD

School: UPenn SoM

Options: Baylor College of Medicine, Univ of Wisconsin-Madison

Reasoning: Plethora of research on cancer biology (4 NCI-designated cancer centers on or near campus, most of which are available to grad students), avg time to finish ~ 5 years, guaranteed 5 years funding of 26,500/year, impressive alumni track record, grad students generate great publication, coastal area (i felt out of place in the midwestern/southern schools during the interviews).

Congrats ccmad... I've been watchin your posts since you and S are going into such similar fields. I wish you all the best!

His final choice is being made this weekend after 1 more visit at UT/Md Anderson.

History PhD (Ancient History)

FINAL CHOICE: Cornell University

OPTIONS: University of Virginia, Boston University, University of Michigan (waitlist)

REASONS:
- Good faculties in both History and Classics depts.
- Friendliness and approachability of professors (in particular the ones with whom I will be working).
- Great funding package.
- Flexibility of the program (my interests are rather wide and varied).
- I'd hate to live in a metropolis again and love nature!

Thank you. I wish your son the best as well in the decision-making process.

Incidentally, my parents expressed their great relief when I chose Penn over the other two. Being Koreans, they just went bananas whenever they heard the term "ivy league," even without considering the strength of the individual program. Irregardless, I feel that my school will be the best fit for my needs, so I'm excited about going this summer!

ccmad congrats, I am at Penn currently. Feel free to PM me if you have any question about penn (but don't ask about the bio program :))

90% sure it'll be the University of Washington - Seattle.

I still haven't heard from half the schools I applied to, and haven't gotten a financial aid packet from ANY of the schools I applied to, but things still seem to be gravitating in a certain direction. It seems like the best combination of the program I want and workable finances. And admittedly, just the honor of being one of only six people admitted to the program goes a long way towards making you feel all warm and fuzzy about going there.
