Vett68-- when did your D get accepted to SDSU? My son is still waiting for them. He got into ASU with a 6K scholarship

Both my daughters are at SDSU. My older daughter received early admission in early December. My other daughter got in for regular admission on March 1. Now we’re waiting to see if our son gets in.

What’s everybody sweating?? Last year’s stats were as follows:

Avg GPA 3.4
Avg SAT 962/1600

If you beat those two stats, which is not terribly hard to do, you should have a good chance.

Accepted!
Major: Eng Rhetoric and Composition

GPA: 4.2 CSU/UC GPA or 3.75 UW

Like a lot of CSUs, LB has a teired admission criteria. Locals are guaranteed admission with a 2900 CSU index while out of area students are held to a much higher standard - according to this article, 3950 in 2011. That equates to a about 3.4 GPA and 1200 SAT. (locals get in with a 2.3 GPA and 1000 SAT)

[LATimes: Admission constraints lead Cal State to favor ‘local’ students :InlandPolitics.com](http://inlandpolitics.com/blog/2011/05/03/latimes-admission-constraints-lead-cal-state-to-favor-local-students/)

I’m not complaining or crying about it. The CSU mission is focused on local kids. Even SDSU and SLO favor local applicants. For an out of area applicant like my son, the ‘average’ is meaningless because it can be swayed significantly by the mix of local vs out of area kids. The required index for non-locals is tweaked a little each year (up or down) to fill the available seats. My kid is probably on the bubble. If the skew higher this year, he’s not getting in.

Did you guys get your acceptance through e-mail?

@NCalRent,

You’re listing second hand sources. Why not go straight to CSULBs “official” statistics dashboard website. The average SAT last year was 962 and was almost 20 points lower than 2 years ago. 1200 for non locals and 1000 for locals does not average 962. The article just proves there’s a lot of chatter going around that distorts the actual picture and causes potential students undue agony waiting for their response. The stats don’t lie.

http://daf.csulb.edu/offices/univ_svcs/institutionalresearch/dashboard/

Also, the theory that the averages are brought down by poorer performing local are students is NOT TRUE. According to the dashboard, Non-Local Area students actually averaged 956 points on the SAT. That’s 12 points lower than Local Area students. I am really starting to question all the chatter going on, not just here on CC, but also the news websites I read.

Just be patient. If you’re an average student with a 3.2 gpa and a 1,000 on the SAT, you should be able to get in, even if you’re not a local.

Appreciate the link though it reflects enrolled students rather than admitted. Its hard to infer admission thresholds from. It looks like less than half of admitted freshmen actually attend. Do the really high achieving non locals admitted to CSULB go to Cal Poly or a UC? Are many high achieving local students are ‘place bound’ as the CSU system calls them?

It does show very similar SAT scores, though the averge GPA is significantly different. The local schools have show a 3.29 vs non-local of 3.57. That means the average local enrollee had a CSU Index of 3552 vs non local Index of 3812. This would include recruited students (athletes, etc) that may not meet the threshold a standard applicant is held to.

Given the rise in applications this year, it seems reasonable to expect the standard to rise a bit. It seems unlikely a CSU Index in the 3500 range will get a non-local student accepted. As you say, time will tell.

got accepted for Aerospace Engineering (any one out there knows how good is this major at CSULB???)
sat: 1030/1600 1580/2400
csu gpa: 4.17

Enrolled averages are more relevant and is what most universities publish for their stats.

Avg. Non Local stats Fall 2012
3.57 GPA, 959 SAT

Avg. Local stats for Fall 2012
3.29 GPA, 968 SAT

Not that difficult to get into, no matter how you slice and dice it. I am sure some majors are more difficult than others. The stats actually went down last year, even though number of applicants went up, so I don’t see the direct correlation there.

@farzzin2012,

Cal Poly Pomona would have been better in the LA area. SLO is out of the question with your stats. Pomona may be a stretch.

Mechanical Here in my 4th year. Since were all the MAE department I feel I can share my $0.02. Pretty much I really enjoy the program here and as far as outside opportunities which are far more important than anything you would learn in the classroom at any institution, there are plenty here. We have a Boeing Lab on campus, the C-17 Boeing operation is just at the local airport a few minutes away. Northrop Grumman I believe is close by as is Space X (maybe a half hour drive). We constantly get emails in our inbox about internships and my advice; apply to all of them; thats how I got an interview recently which hopefully pans out. Also there is a Rocket team on campus which competes and build their own rocket, we have a formula/baja car team with the Society of Automotive Engineers, and ample opportunities for you to apply what you learn in the classroom. Dont just show up to class and expect to find a job out of college, thats how many engineers shoot themselves in the foot.
Tl;Dr Its a great program with many opportunities nearby.
