Fall 2007 Transfer

So, I would be applying from University of Chicago with mostly B grades (hopefully). I might have a lower one in a Statistics course, but we've found in the class the graders are uncommonly wacky with what they give out. I had a 27 ACT and a 4.0 GPA in high school. I took the most difficult classes in high school and I'm heading down a straightforward path in college to study film (it's just that UChicago doesn't have the kind of film program I'm looking for and I've heard great things lately about U of M's program). I am from Michigan and only out of state for UChicago. I am involved in some activities here including volunteering for the the student movie theater/film society. I also am the person in charge of showing movies two nights a week to my housemates. It's a sign of my good taste, lol. Anyhoo, does anyone think it's possible that I will have a shot at getting the transfer? Thanks!

From what i've gathered, it's a bit easier to get into as a transfer than as a freshman. The acceptance rates are similar, but many transfer students have told me they wouldn't/didn't get in as a freshman, yet got in as sophomores/juniors. If your grades are above a 3.0 at Chicago, I would say you have a good shot. You are talking about mostly B's, Michigan is looking for A/B performance from transfers as i'm looking at some average GPAs.

I got in originally as a freshman but I decided on UChicago for the city life, but if I don't get in at Northwestern I may consider U of M again for film strictly because UChicago wouldn't be very helpful for film.

How many credits do you have? just out of curiosity bc I'm thinking about transferring to UMich from Columbia. I dunno if having more credits and courses that are more difficult help or not. I'm in mostly elementary classes (I'm a freshman!) and took 15.5 credits this semester (5 classes) and maybe 14 next. Is that not enough?

Thanks

Lol from columbia? Do you mind if I ask why?

Transferring from Columbia to UM Engineering is actually not a bad switch (if thats what Flavour is trying to do)

How did you get into Michigan, let alone Chicago, with a 27 ACT?

Um, 27 is a lot higher than you might think. Especially for Michigan students. I am from Michigan so it's much higher than the state average - and furthermore, not everything depends solely on those stupid endurance tests that are the ACT or SATs! I've met plenty of students at U of C who may have scored perfect 800s on all of their SAT tests, but they are struggling socially as well as in some classes because their minds are glued to math and numbers and science and they haven't adjusted to writing papers and thinking about ideas and not just absolutes and such. And socially, they don't know how to behave. One kid actually stated that he must put in a certain amount of time into IM sports in order to satisfy a necessary need for social interation - literally something along those lines. Then another kid actually sent around an email as a personal project wanting to know "what is romance" - there's a whole different side to college that isn't just numbers and scores.

U of C looks at the WHOLE picture that is the APPLICATION, and so does Michigan as far as I hear it. There are brainiacs here who had wonderful scores but I am doing just as well or better in classes. It's really a matter of applying yourself and following the material, because I can guarantee you one thing - college is so NOT high school! It's not even close.
